Activity calories. Really bad calculation.

This is my first Garmin unit. I have used in the pass polar, Fitbit etc.. with the 735xt I obtain the worst results in the calculation of calories during the total day. I am around 2300 in a normal day and 735xt calculate more than 3300 calories per day. Any suggestion? Martin.
  • Samples:

23 dec 3941 calories. Stay 1826 cal. Steps 15.000 not other activities.
24 dec 3622 calories. Steps 6.000. Not other activities.
25 dec 3075 calories. Steps 5.500. Not other activities.
    66kg, 1,74 m, 53 years old.

A random calculation would be more precise.
  • It is clear, if you desactívate the HR the calculation seem correct. You have HR but you need to desactívate during the day and that you can not use during activities( running, bike,...) because is not enough precise and you need an external band. Really ridiculous product.

Have you done any actual runs or rides with GPS yet? The Firstbeat algorithms used here do need a period of learning you.

I am 1.95m, 73kg, male aged 50 and I seem to get just over 2000 for BMR and typically may get another 1000 or so active calories from around an hour's run or ride plus sundry extras from random steps during the day.
  • Thanks for your information. I trie to investigate this. Seem interesting.

I have received information from Firstbeat confirming that them are not involved in the calculation for tracking calories during the day, only in activity calories (running, bike,..) . The algorithm to track day calories is Garmin's own. Seem that this algorithm can need also a small learn time. By the moment all my problems continue. Garmin do not know, not answer. Martin.
  • Interesting about daily calories.

What is the situation with your BMR? Is it, at least, working out the same each day?

As mentioned Garmin seem to be using BMR + 20% for your calories just to "exist" each day. Is then your issue with the 20%? This does seem to be something that some calorie calculators use.
  • FR 235 calculates running calories differently than FR 220 and other programs do

I don't know what the algorithm is, but with my previous Garmin watches FR 220, 210 and an ancient one in the 300 series, I typically "burn" around 90 calories per running mile. This makes sense, since I am 5' 5" and 115 pounds, and is about on par with what Runkeeper calculates.

I noticed my FR 235 calculates a much lower burn rate, around 67 calories per mile. Does this have something to do with heart rate being factored in? I wonder why it's different - and likely incorrect.
  • The 235 (and indeed 735 for that matter) will separate "activity" and BMR calories so the "67" is probably just the excess over existing when you are running.

It is true that Garmin start from a high (bad) calculation of BMR, 1820 again around 1500 that the is normaly accepted for me. But this 300 Kc are not enough to justify today 3405Kc in total with only 639 kcal from running. The difference 3405-1820-639= 946 are theoricly burned walking during the day in 4 km. Regards.

I just got a Vivosmart HR+ and i'm wondering about the same thing.

Today i've done 3 walk (activities) which were 89, 34 and 114 cal, which look ok to me for about 2miles in total as i'm not fit at all hence getting this device to help.

Now i've done a total of 6k steps so far, and 11 stairs. which it gives my active calories as 2184 which is crazy high.

To me it looks like it double counts your BMR. Which is why when you look at the calories you see resting 1438 + active 2427 = total of 3865 which is just a stupid number.

When surely the BMR should be taken away from the active number before giving you the calculation? In other words my additional active calories over BMR is 989, thanks to 6k steps + stairs etc (750), and 3 walks (237cal)? I think they have just messed up the calculation somewhere forgetting that for the time you are active you cannot be inactive too.
