Activity calories. Really bad calculation.

This is my first Garmin unit. I have used in the pass polar, Fitbit etc.. with the 735xt I obtain the worst results in the calculation of calories during the total day. I am around 2300 in a normal day and 735xt calculate more than 3300 calories per day. Any suggestion? Martin.
  • What are you using as your known good reference?

Garmin definitely calculates calories differently (I believe heart rate is used in the calculation) and the figure includes BMR calories as well but I have yet to see anyone to show it's wrong, just different

I am sure that Garmin is different ( very bad different). My case 66 kg 53 years old and 174 cm. BMR from Garmin 1820 when should be around 1400. Martin.
  • Believe Garmin uses the "BMR plus 20%" way of looking at these things.

Google that and/or an older thread https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?351813-Suddenly-calories-have-changed

I think at various times they may have had the 20%, took it away and put it back. Seems to be there now.

It's high that's for sure, by about 300-500 calories per day on average for me.

I've extensively compared against my fitbit and other online calculators (over a many month baseline). As well i've tracked my weight and calorie intake for years and know that i maintain weight at about 1800-2000 calories per day.

If i turn off the all-day HRM then the number is much more reasonable from steps alone. As it is, i turn the HRM on for sleep (for RHR) and activities only. Suits me fine.

Is really crazy that we purchase one watch with HRM and we need to put this off to improve the watch measure activity. If Garmin can not do this in the good way is better for them and us to stop the production of this products.

I come back to my previous Polar V800. 400 euros trashed.

I wouldn't agree with that. Daily calories is just one of many things i use this watch for (and no where near the main thing), and turning off the HRM gives me (what i feel is) an accurate calorie measurement and extends the battery life by another 2-5 days (on average). That's fine with me.

Overall my 735XT is a pretty impressive piece of hardware. It's not perfect, and i've had my issues. I love mine and would highly recommend it.

A pretty impressive piece of hardware with a depressive software that is not capable to calculate your BMR.

I'd like to add that my job requires me to sit on a chair all day!
Seriously, all I do is sit!

There are some days the watch says I burnt 800 activity calories when all I have done so far in the day is:
    1. Sleep - 6 hours
    2. Wake up - get ready - 30 min
    3. Drive to work - 30 min
    4. Sit - 8 hours
    5. Check watch - 724 active calories.
  • What periods did you think you got the activity calories?
"Getting ready" and "driving" may well account for some...

But the "interesting" stat is how many you get during the long "Sit". And you are not allowed to get up at all ?

    I'll upload a picture later. I'm a programmer so I mainly sit.
