Charging problems with the 735xt

Morning all,
Has anyone noticed unusual charging issues with the 735? Sometimes when plugged into a wall, nothing seems to happen at all. No charging, no change in the face screen to the 'charging' screen (even if it vibrates after being plugged in, to suggest it's charging.) Sometimes one or the other of those two things happens. Currently it's plugged into my laptop and is charging... although with no change in the screen face. Feels like it behaves as it wants... not ideal when i'm having breakfast thinking it's charging and when i've finished my eggs realised i'm still at 8%.
Anyone any ideas?
John
  • What you probably are seeing is this:

When you plug into a wall charger, you might not see anything, or maybe a short "toast" that says you are charging. This is actually a feature. If you are on a long run or ride, you can charge while recording that run/ride with something like a battery based cell phone charger with no interruption.

Most Connect IQ watch faces show real no indication that you are charging, and you just need to notice that the battery level is going up. The native watchface may or may not not change the icon - I'm not sure on a 735. (If you click on my sig, most of the CIQ watchfaces there do change the battery icon to an up arrow when the battery level is increasing, and while sometimes has a false positive, isn't bad).

When you plug into a pc/mac, you should see a full charging screen. If you don't, try a different USB port and make sure you can see the 735 as a "drive" on the computer
  • The native watch face will show a charging icon if using a wall charger. It is a bit small but it is there.

It should certainly go to a black charging screen when connected to a computer. Now and again have seen it just in the "wall charger" mode but it still charges.

Are you sure it is always fully connected to the charger?

It might require a master reboot. Hold the power button for 20s, but sync first.

Same here. 735 charges when plugged into USB of my iMac, but doesn't charge when plugged into the wall outlet.

It's likely charging, but if you have a Connect IQ watchface running, the only indication you'll see is the battery % will increase. There's no special screen when you're plugged into a wall/battery based charger.

Ah, ok. You are right - I do have a ConnectIQ watchface running. Let me check this...

I absolutely hate that about CIQ watchfaces! Everytime I connect the 735xt to charge, I need to make sure it sits properly because I can't see any visual confirmation that charging is taking place (on Actiface CIQ).

How hard is to add programmatic access to the charging state in CIQ so that we have an indication similar to the native watchface?

It's actually not that easy (the data isn't exposed and the watchface has to guess!). If you click on my Sig, the "Simple Big" watchface and others of mine, changes the battery icon to an up-arrow when it believes it's charging! :) But it can lag a minute or two when changing status.
  • Thanks.  This worked for me perfectly  Cheers.

  • Same issue. When I charge via my PC, the watch diplays a HUMONGOUS message indicating the charging percentage.

When I plugged into a standard USB wall charger, the above does not happen.

Garmin's website indicates a 5V/2.4A is wall charger is needed.  So mine just arrived from Amazon (purchased a generic 5V/2.4 charger).  I plugged the USB into the wall charger and no HUMONGOUS message. Frustrated, I went to this forum.

The tiny battery % charge indicator shows it is charging!!!

Wish Garmin would be conistent.  That being said, I can charge my watch now without a PC!  Thanks for the help everyone!
