Can 735xt do any navigation? Connect IQ?

Hi all!

I understand the 735xt doesn't do much navigation natively. Are there any apps or any other way to use the 735xt for both hiking navigation and geocaching? Can I at least get a way to display GPS coordinates so I could use that as a backup to help find current location on a paper map?

I know the Fenix has all that, but, I'm looking for something smaller.

Thanks!
  • Hi

actually the 735 does do native navigation and quite well. Create a course in Garmin Connect and send it to the 735 then if you have the map enabled you get a map and turn notifications.

if you want co-ordinates and waypoints and stuff like that then try Jim's Hike2 app.

  • Also Strava segments. I followed a 4.5 mile running segment today within a longer run over terrain that was completely new to me that was part off road, part on and was able to find my way without any wrong turns.
  • Perhaps this also helps?

Although it's more a pointer toward the next point (with distance), so no turn-to-turn stuff...

I've found the built-in navigation to work great - yesterday I did a brand new 24 mile route, just planned it out in Garmin Connect, sent to the phone via the Garmin phone app, then followed the route on the phone. The breadcrumb trail map is fine for making sure you're heading in the right direction, and the alerts make sure you are aware when a turn is coming up.

I'm actually learning more and more about this watch all the time... Didn't realise you could actually store multiple routes on the watch! Thought it was a one at a time thing... I really is a pretty awesome device :)
  • Yeah you can store as many as you like.

The one "drawback" have found is that, mid activity, you can't change the course you are doing or the location you are navigating towards or save a location (all of which you can do on a 920) or add Strava segments short of stopping the timer and saving that activity, changing the navigation option and getting going again.

Don't think you can do a course and Strava segments at same time either but not yet had a desire to do both. Might be time for 2 watches in that scenario!

But, with a bit of planning, the 735 is quite capable for navigation.
  • Yeah, just tried it out on a bike ride to work and it really works pretty well... At first I was a bit confused with the zooming, but then noticed it works properly once you actually start the activity (otherwise you see the map and can zoom but it doesn't center the map).

But for me it more then suffices, main goal would be a pointer towards certain waypoints so I at least know I'm heading in the right direction. But indeed, planning walks/routes is very usable as well. You can always 'go back to start' if you want to break it off.

Sure, there might always be something to add or a more improved implementation but as it is it's already perfectly usable and a great addon for my lack of sense of direction ;)
