Using GARMIN Live Segments

So, Strava Live Segments are working pretty well for me. I will probably never be the fastest on a given segment, but beating my own PR is a motivating push. I don't think I want to keep spending the money required for a Strava Premium subscription after the 60 days trial so I am wondering, whether the 735XT is able to use Garmin's own segments as live segments?

If that is possible, I would simply re-generate my preferred segments in Garmin Connect and use those to push me during the run. All I need is the watch telling me that I am approaching a segment and that I better get my ass up.
  • Not heard of Garmin segments working like this.

If you are only interested in bike segments then you can use http://gniza.org/segments/ to create segment FIT files for loading onto your watch but that is a bit of PITA to keep setting up.

Compared to a Garmin device, a Strava subscription is quite cheap I always think...

I got the segments to work like that. Found a segment, downloaded to the watch thru Garmin Connect. And it worked - told me how many feet to go coming up on it etc., and my time as I exited.

I did have a couple of problems, though. One, it seems to double your time if you go out through the segment, then back through, e.g., an out and back bike ride. Another segment had a message on it "leaderboard not yet developed for this segment" or some such. That segment wouldn't download to the watch, and wouldn't log myself (or anyone) when I went through it on the ground. So, maybe a little buggy but it does what you want.
  • Thank you - I might give that a try.

Makes you wonder why Garmin doesn't push their segements a bit given that they are probably among the leading GPS watch manufacturers.

Regarding Strava Premium pricing: Live Segments (and the competition that comes with them) would be my main usage since Garmin's training plans are fine. If everything works as planned I should be able to use my Forerunner for four years and four years of Strava Premium is more than half of the Forerunner's price so I am not to happy shelling out the money.

Recreating Strava's segments in Garmin Connect on the other hand would be totally fine for me.
  • The collaboration with Strava with their segments says a lot about the uptake of Garmin ones...
