Lap button "double press" driving me crazy during swim workouts!

Love the 735xt, but this is driving me crazy. I have swim workouts programmed into the "My Workouts" section of the training page. I will swim an interval, then hit the "lap" button which starts the rest countdown until the next interval. But many times, when I press the "lap" button, it immediately starts into the next set, skipping the rest, almost like it thinks I have hit the lap button twice. And worse, when I go back to look at the data, the previous set doesn't show in the data. For example, today's swim was 100-200-300-400-500-400-300-200-100 yards, for a total of 2500 yards. Upon completing the second 400, it skipped the rest after I pressed the lap button, and when I look at my swim data, it correctly shows the workout as 2500 yards, but the only intervals it shows are 100-200-300-400-500-300-200-100 (no sign of the second 400). This happens at least one interval per workout, but usually two or three times per workout. Any advice? Thanks.
  • That's strange. Can you give a bit more information about how the workout was set up? Did you have a fixed rest time assigned between each swim interval, or perhaps a fixed repetition time? It sounds like probably a fixed rest time if the watch was counting you in and each swim was a different distance. When the watch is counting you in, there is no need to press Lap as you push off - seems like you know that but just checking... If you'd be willing to post the GC link for the activity (or a screenshot of the intervals view) that would be helpful.
  • And one more question... When you look at History on the watch, are all the intervals shown properly there? If yes, is the time for the second 400 what you would expect?
  • Thanks for your help. Here's the garmin connect link from the workout missing the second 400:

So the way this is set up, it's 100-200-300-400-500-400-300-200-100 with a fixed 30 second rest between each interval. I am pressing "lap" as I finish each interval (which I think I need to do, right? On my old Suunto it would just "know" that I stopped swimming). I don't press lap to start, I just go when the timer ends.

On the link above, when I hit lap at the finish of the second 400, it immediately took me to the 300, no rest. I hit pause (because I needed a little rest!) during that particular workout.

On the watch, under intervals, the second 400 does not show up, although it does show the total distance correctly at 2500 yards.

    Thanks
  • When you set up a workout for running or cycling there is no need to press lap, each step just follows including the rests. As you observe, pressing lap during a programmed workout moves you on to the next step. That's the way it's always been when using programmed workouts. I don't see why swimming workouts would be any different.

When you are swimming normally and you want to do intervals then you need to press lap at the end of the interval to begin recording the rest period, then lap to start the next interval.

So no, you do not need to press lap at the end of each step in a programmed workout, unless you want to skip to the next step. The only way out of a programmed workout AFAIK is to press Stop or step through to the end by pressing Lap.

Thanks for the link. One more question - when you say you hit "pause" after you unexpectedly found yourself in the 300, did you use the Lap button (like is typical for swimming), or did you use Stop-Resume?

To clarify the statement above, Pool Swim Workouts are very different from Run or Bike. You do need to press Lap when you get to the wall at the end of a set.

Yes I used "stop/resume" to rest before the unexpected 300. Thanks.

  • I'm having a similar problem. I've got some repeats in my swim set and always after the last repeat when you hit the lap button it skips to the next bit of the set without a rest. So this morning was 3 x 125m with 20sec rest after each 125m, followed by 2 x 175m with 30 sec rest after each 175m and then 3 x 125m with 20sec rest after each 125m then 200m warm down. The watch skipped the last 20sec rest of the first repeat and went straight to timing the first 175m and did the same after the 175m section and the following 125m section.
  • I have the same issue

I have the same issue and really don't think I am hitting the lap button twice. I believe this has also happened to me during a run workout or 2 but mostly during pool swim workouts. I really think it is a software issue. I have repeated the same workout with the same missed rests. Then I recreate the same workout and I have no issues.
