Disable cached satellite position data

I was wondering if there is a way to disable cached satellite position data on the 735xt. Essentially I don't want the EPO.BIN to be loaded from GC/GCM or subsequently used by 735xt. Moreover, I don't really care if that delays the initial satellite acquisition.

Any ideas if this is somehow formally supported or if there is any hack that would do it?
  • Can I ask why? The only way I know of is to delete the file or reset the watch

But I according to Tim Groses' reply (on another thread) the EPO.BIN file is transferred to \NEWFILES and then "consumed" by the watch.

Should I try to mount the 735xt and make EPO.BIN "read only" so that it cannot be overwritten with new data?

The reason I want to do this is because I would like to improve the accuracy/performance of the GPS chipset. There have been a few times where the 735xt took forever to lock satellites which (I am speculating) had to do with bad/nonexistent EPO.BIN. The tracks I got were fantastic (not a scientific test) and I am wondering if satellite caching presents a compromise between speed of acquisition and track accuracy.

I personally tend to do a lot of dynamic warmups before starting my runs so I don't really need "instantaneous" lock to satellites. I prefer accuracy over speed of acquisition ...
  • I attempted making EPO.BIN "read only" but Garmin Express updates it anyway :-(

    Any other ideas?
  • Deleting the file won't improve the accuracy. Leaving your watch stationary in a spot with a full view of the sky for a while before the start of the run will. To get a 'ready to go' from the watch I believe it needs a lock on 3 satellites. However if you get a lock on more then that's better. The long you leave it with a view of the open sky the more it'll get and this will mean a better GPS track. One way to check lock stability is look at elevation and pace before setting off. Elevation should be constant (you need at least 4 satellites to get this) and pace should be zero.

  • Well if you wanted to really delete the EPO.BIN every time then do a hard reset (the 15 second) before every run.

Like CW I fail to see how this will be sure to improve accuracy as it will just take longer to get back to where you would have been and then still do as CW says.
  • Thanks for the input everyone!

I guess there is no setting and/or easy way of doing that.
