Problem with Live Strava Segment sync to watch

Former Member

hi - I started loading Strava Live Segments and noticed a bug/issue that I wanted to share; basically when I un-star / delete a Segment or I move back from Strava Segments back to Garmin Segments then the old segments stay on the watch.

Garmin Connect correctly syncs from Strava but the transfer to actual watch seems to missing a 'delete' old function in the sync process. I tried switching from Strava back to Garmin to delete but the strava segments remained ...

New ones are synced. Old / unstar / deleted are not removed.

Anybody got a similar experience / got a workaround ?

thanks
  • I did wonder myself whether ones I had unstarred were being deleted automatically. I had starred too many in the past so took this as a bit of opportunity to reassess mine.

To be sure I started from what I wanted, I deleted all the segment FIT files in the Segments folder having first checked there was also none in the NEWFILES folder, disconnected and checked the watch was saying I no longer had any. I then reconnected to Garmin Express and looked for them coming back into NEWFILES.

Not tried it with Garmin segments. Kind of given up with them now as the day is too short to recreate hundreds on another platform that I have already.

Exactly my point about Strava Routes vs Garmin Courses BTW!
  • Going off topic a bit there but although the Strava route builder has more options like following paths etc, I don't really use them though as to "navigate" one, I would need to be looking at my phone not my watch. But I guess that is sort of your point?

Ideally though you could create a Strava route, tick the segments en route you want to do and pull it down to your watch and all these segments come down too. I do quite a lot of segment interval sessions so an indicator of distance to next segment when not in one would be kind of nice.

Not sure what's going with courses and segments. A while back I set up some Garmin segments and then created a course to incorporate them. On the 920 the segment start/end points were created as course points so you got distance to next start/end point but you just did get any segment performance data.

I'll try and see if there any plans for "improvements"...

I agree this is going off topic so I'll leave it for the other thread (From Segments to Routes).

    Quick q on topic.

Did you figure out if your suggested solution of manually deleting the contents of the Segments folder is the official way to manage Strava Live Segments on the 735?

I am asking because I noticed a second folder next to Segments which contains something called seg_list.fit (or something like that) which seems related. Did you delete that one too?
  • No did not delete that - presume it is an index file rather than the watch having to scan potentially hundreds of files. It seemed to disappear when had no segments.

Manually deleting FIT files clearly not the official way!

    But it works right?

Also, do you have any idea how to force the 735 to get new "popular" SLSs when one travels? I would love to tell my Garmin that from now on I will be running in let's say Downtown London and I would like my popular segments there?

Since popular segments are decided by Strava, is it safe to assume that they are driven by the location setting in my Strava profile? I guess one of us needs to change that setting to let's say London and try a re-sync of segments ...
  • Tried again and deleted all my segments and indeed unstarred them all on Strava and then restarred a few. I also changed my location to somewhere 30 miles away that I goto regularly.

Looks like it is best way to delete the segment list file.

Tried on my Edge 810 as well.

I didn't get any "popular" segments - either "at home" or in this other place on either device. On the 735 I got the ones had starred and also those I had a goal on - which were all running ones. As such, on the Edge, only got the bike ones had starred.

Do we have an idea as to which Strava Segments the 735 decides to take on? I have only two starred segments, although have obviously regularly crossed many more. When i first managed to get it to sync, it pulled 53 across! is there a way of telling it exactly which ones to take over? In Central London there's so many, my watch is going to surely get confused crossing so many overlapping segments i have synched - i only want a handful of my own selection.

Ones you star and/or have a goal on in Strava.

In theory it also meant to select some "Popular Segments" in your area if you have that option enabled at https://www.strava.com/athlete/segments/starred but this has not been working for me.

I communicated with Strava support about the "popular segments" (PS) feature. Apprently they are determined based on the "location" that one sets on their Strava Profile. So the support suggested that if you need new PS when you travel for example in a new area, all you need to do is to temporarily change your Strava Profile Location and force a sync. I haven't tried that yet but it does sound promising.

And Tim, my 735 fetches PS just fine. Maybe you need to check your location info on Strava?
