Watch screen pixels "stuck" and won't display anything properly!!!

After charging my watch on Friday, it worked perfectly fine for a 4 hour race on Saturday and a short open water swim on Sunday. But several hours later Sunday evening, I looked down and noticed my watch screen was a mess.

I have the "Jiang Nan" watch screen from the IQ store, and the pixels were not refreshing as the time and graphics moved. So, where the hour and minute of the current time should be, instead one single number, it's an overlay of all the minutes that passed (05 on top of 04 on top of 03 on top of 01, etc.). So the result is a big blob where nothing can be clearly read.

After noticing this, I unlocked the watch into activity mode, but the screen does not change. I can see little shadowy colors of where the activity screen graphics would be, but the watch face graphic pixels aren't disappearing, so I can't read anything. Working from memory, I can start an activity recording, pause it, start a new lap, etc. But just nothing can be seen on the screen. After just letting the activity run for 30min or so, the screen gradually came back. Very faint at first, and a few more toggling between menus made everything clear again. Great. Except the sticking happened again after another 30min or so in watch mode.

Since then, nothing has worked. The screen isn't even cluttered with stuck pixels anymore. It's mostly blank, but you can see faint color pixels of where the battery bar on the side should be, and also bits of color of where the flower in the watch face design would have been. Activity recording still works, and can be uploaded to Garmin Connect if the watch is connected via USB. But I can't see anything on the screen!!

I've tried resetting via power button many times, tried to update the firmware (when connected you can only see a faint outline of the charging screen, and then when ejected from the computer, I couldn't see anything so I'm not sure whether the update got installed), and nothing has worked. Right now I'm just leaving it in activity mode to let the battery run out, and hoping maybe that will reset the screen.

Has anyone had a similar issue and has figured out how to fix this?? Googling and youtubed a bunch, but have not seen anything related to this. I'm on a tight training schedule for races coming up and need to log my miles, and this is really stressing me out! :/
  • Might need to do a master reset to see if that will fix it.

I looked at the user guide online, and the only means of restoring to factory default settings I found is to go through the watch menu screen and choosing the restore default option. But I can't actually navigate the menu because the screen doesn't work lol...

    Is there another way??
  • Try this

Non-prompted Non-Vol Clear - Clears NV and deletes all FIT files including Activities, Courses, Workouts etc. (takes the device back to defaults).

Hold the light button until the device prompts "Shut Down?".
    Select "Yes"
(in your case you could just hold the power/light button for at least 15 seconds until powers off by itself)

Hold the two right buttons, <Start/Stop> and <Back>, while turning the device on by pressing and releasing the light button.
Wait for an audible beep and release the <Start/Stop> button.
Wait for a second audible beep and release the <Back> button.
The non-vol clear was successful if the device finishes powering up and goes Setup Wizard page.

    Thank you, TIMGROSE!

Unfortunately I won't be able to try it, as the watch is now with the store from where I purchased it. When the person connected the watch to a computer via USB, it was no longer charging, and the charge screen pixels are stuck on the watch face even when disconnected from the computer. Apparently he's never seen this pixel sticking problem in any Forerunner, nevermind in this new model. He needs to speak to Garmin first to confirm, but he's pretty sure I'll be needing a replacement. :/

So, hopefully no one else will run into this problem, as it seems to be a fatal one... Still unsure whether it's a software problem or a problem with my physical watch.
  • Agree definitely should not happen so a replacement sounds like the best course of action.
