charging 735xt during activity?

I saw a video from dcrainmaker where he compared the fenix 3 and the fr 920 with respect to charging while an activity. The 920 stopped the activity and charged. The fenix 3 could charge while continuing the activity. ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S9haDnwIuSQ Garmin Fenix3 use while charging with USB battery pack)

Do you know how the 735xt works? Is it possible to charge during an activity? (eg during a longer bike trip)

I don't have a 735, but do have a 230 and it's likely the same.

Just connect the watch to the charging cable an plug it into to a power source that isn't a USB port on a computer.

I use a battery based cell phone charger..

I have the 735XT and i charged during my last Ironman, worked flawlessly

Yes with the 230/235/630 and 735 you can charge them all on the go with the timer running.

Did try with my computer and my 735XT and the activity was stopped.
Perhaps it works better with a power bank but should be the same.

Garmin Connect was not running on the computer.

In my post I mention NOT to use the USB port on a computer. When you do that the watch detects that there is a computer on the other end, and goes into mass store mode. It doesn't matter if GE is running or not.

Try again with either a battery or a wall charger with a USB port. (something like your phone charger)
