OHR : works when on ankle...?

Afternoon all,
For those who wish to hide the 735 from view when not exercising, should the Optical HR monitor work when attached to the ankle? It seems to pick up a pulse ok for me (and just about fits!) but wondered if anyone had run comparative tests (e.g. wrist vs ankle) ? Any other problems leaving it down there, apart from the added risk of it being bashed about?!
Thanks vm for any thoughts.
  • Google "ankle optical HR" and some comments on other devices on DC Rainmaker and other reviews crops up
    e.g. http://www.dcrainmaker.com/2014/05/scosche-antbluetooth-optical.html

Curious as to why you need to "hide" the 735 though? Presume that is also from yourself as well as everybody else.
  • Okay, thank you... it looks like theoretically it should work ok. Before mine flooded yesterday, I had tried it on my ankle and got some sensible readings... but I just wanted to check the figures weren't likely to garbage. (or slower to react, etc.)
And re. 'hiding' it, pretty though it is, I don't think it really works too well with a suit, and I wear a steel watch to work anyway. I guess I could wear it on the other wrist but it looks a bit daft.
  • Nice idea

But it may be an interesting option. I'm a surgeon and I can´t wear anything in my wrist when scrubbed in. I've always wondered how was my HR according the type of surgery. Now I can test it myself. Thanks for the idea.

Are you allowed to wear a chest strap or armband HRM? If so, then you have viable options irrespective of whether the optical HRM on a Garmin watch would give usable results when worn on one's ankle. Even if you cannot wear anything that may be broadcasting over (Bluetooth or ANT+) radio, there are still options such as the Wahoo TICKR-X which can capture and store heart rate for an ‘activity’ session in its internal memory until the next sync opportunity.

Thanks for the tip. I guess I could use the chest strap, I hadn't really thought about it. But I tested in my ankle it yesterday in a Appendicectomy and it worked just fine. I was a little bit disappointed to see that my HR was like normal walking/standing. I will try it tomorrow as a "Other" activity, but I´m only "messing around", it is not a big deal to know my HR while working.
  • Agepi7o,

I'd love to see your heart rate graph when you accidentally hit that artery you were so careful to avoid. I am an airline pilot and have recorded my HR during a 'normal' approach and landing and with 30 knots crosswind. The difference is quite noticeable.

    Gusty crosswind:

That's right, I can see a difference but you reached only a bit over 100, so you were in control.
As soon as I have to perform a difficult procedure I will record it. Tomorrow is my last day (Holidays :) untill September and I don´t have any difficult procedure scheduled. But ,as I'll be on call also tomorrow, perhaps I'll be lucky and something urgent comes to the ER to check my HR.
