how to load Courses into the 735?

I tried to find where in Garmin Connect to import a GPX or TCX without luck.

then I tried to take and existing course TCX and just copy to NewFiles as I do with my bike Garmin units. No luck again.

how do I load an existing course into the735? (I do have Maps turned ON in the 735)

thanks
  • create the course in Garmin connect on the web then send it to the phone.

  • You can only manually load a course FIT file onto a 735. If you only have a GPX or TCX file then one option would be to load that into your Edge unit as you normally do then grab the FIT file from the COURSES folder on the Edge and load that into NEWFILES on the 735.

Probably best, if you can, to do what kitenski suggests then you can enjoy the automated turn guidance feature the 735 has with files that are sent to it from courses stored in Garmin Connect.

@ DJKPOW If you don't have an Edge 1000 to convert TCX and GPX to FIT, JaVaWa RTWtool can convert most file types. If you want to get a GPX into GC you can via Import Activities then convert to a Course, finer details on RideWithGPS help forum.
  • You only have two options on the 735XT. The simplest way is to create a route in Garmin Connect and squirt to device. The map / route creation is pretty sucky but works. The alternative is to create a GPX in a third party app/site (I use Movescount as I also own a Suunto and it is much better for route creation but you could use Strava). You then have to import via Garmin Basecamp and squirt to the device. Basecamp looks like software from at least a decade ago and the rascals want to sell you a map! lol... On a Fenix 3 there is the additional option of moving the GPX to the hidden GARMIN/NEWFILES directory on the removable drive of the device and it converts to ANT after you disconnect from the USB. Although the devices are OK Garmin seem to neglect their software ecosystem and this is particularly true of the software support to the navigational capabilities of their sports watches. Suunto Movescount is my go to web app for route creation.
  • You then have to import via Garmin Basecamp

You don't need to involve Basecamp. GPX courses can be imported - with some luck - into Garmin Connect directly. Once that's done sending it to the watch is straightforward.
  • Still another option: Use komoot (https://www.komoot.com/) to create your route and then the CIQ app (https://apps.garmin.com/de-DE/apps/d918ae1e-9e7b-4fdf-b336-46141a0ccd6a) to transfer the route to the 735XT.

Advantages: The komoot routing is excellent as far as generated routes and user interface goes.
Disadvantages: Currently CIQ doesn't allow to transfer turn-by-turn notifications (i.e. the little arrows displayed once you approach a turn). If you use the same workflow with e.g. a Wahoo bike computer, turn-by-turn notifications are transferred correctly, unfortunately this isn't true with the 735XT.
