Double Counting Calories? Running and Steps

After crunching numbers several times, I think Garmin Connect is counting my runs in Steps and thus Step Calories... and then adding the Run calories on top of that.
For example, I walk 10,000 steps and go for a run that accounts for another 6,000 steps. I seem to be getting credit for 6,000 step calories plus the run calories. Sometimes the calorie count is inflated by several hundred. I assume we either need the coders to subtract these numbers or give us the option to disable activity tracking during activities.
Am I making sense? I've been trying to prove myself wrong but I keep coming to the same conclusion. Anyone else noticing this?
  • Do you have the 735 and va-hr linked to the same account, and recording things on both at the same time? Seems you want to turn off activity tracking on one and only record things like runs on one.. Otherwise, it seems you'll get double data...
  • I agree with you about what appears to be a high daily step calorie count but they are giving me credit for those steps during a run also. So if I go run for an hour, I get credit for both the run activity (which I do with HRM-RUN strap) plus the steps I took during that run. I reference the Reports section of Garmin Connect and the Step Count graph. (I have only one watch: 735xt.)
  • Problem Solved?!

So today the numbers seemed to work. My run was counted into steps but NOT the step calories. I have 19k steps right now at 500+ calories with a 7.8mi run at 800+ calories. Makes sense--as opposed to Saturday's 16k step count at 1200+ calories with a 5k at 300+ calories (which is what led me to think they gave me extra credit I didn't deserve).
  • Think this has been escalated on more than one front. Weight Watchers when connected to GC had very similar issue, giving FitPoints for Steps during a run and the run itself, so effectively double counting in the same way as you described the calorie counting. This has been the case for months now. Have not checked if it is fixed there as I am traveling, but will check that as soon as I am able.

I'm seeing high active calories and mileage for steps on days when I also cycle. For instance on June 6th:

Activity
    Active Cal
    Distance

Cycling
    1,235
    33.94 mi

Daily Steps
    897
    11.28

There is no way I walked 11.28 miles; my step count for that day was only 6509 which for me is about 3.4 miles. I don't understand what GC is doing.

Just came on looking for this issue to have been reported as I'm seeing it with my 735 the last two days.

I've ran both days for around 600 calories worth, and then my active calories appear to have largely over-inflated. Today I've got 1002 active calories, despite only running for 602 calories worth and then sitting at my desk for 4 hours. I know I'm a bit of a fidget, but I find it hard to believe I can twitch my way to another 400 active calories burnt!

The only logical solution would be for it to have double reported for both the run and the steps, but it's only done it the last two days. I've had the watch for a week so far and every other day it's reported fine.

I don't think it's related to external footpad use as, although I do have a footpod, I used it for 3 runs last week and they updated ok. It's only the last couple of days this has happened and I've not changed anything compared to last week.

In my case the 735xt is dead on with respect to step calories and miles, it is only GC that inflates the step calories and miles.

I'm not sure if that's the case with me. My watch reports 1765 calories burnt today, 4 hours after getting up and running 7 miles for 702 calories. Looking on Garmin Connect that's broken down into 602 resting and 1161 active, so I've somehow got 459 active calories burnt extra despite doing nothing but walking across the car park to work and getting a coffee!

I'm not sure if it's GC that's inflated it and then when the 735 sync'd it placed the higher figure on the watch, or the watch that's inflated it itself and passed that onto GC.

Whichever, it's a bit irritating if I use My Fitness Pal and see far too many active calories logged.
  • Problem Still Occurs

I haven't heard back from Garmin either. Today I analyzed my data again, and once again, Garmin is counting my runs into my steps and giving me extra calories-burned credit in active calories. 17820 total steps - 6238 running steps = 11582 walking steps. They've given me 1435c for the total steps (they call walking steps) plus the 321c for my run (so 1756c). The 11582 walking steps I figured was close to my 11000 walking steps Rest Day yesterday (absolutely NO activities) and my calorie burn was 585c.
    I just don't get it.

    Same problem here

Same here, last week I ran 3792 cals and I got another 6445 cals from steps only... I am trying to beat my monthly activity cals record, but not in this way...
