How to answer an incoming call?

Hello, is there any way, how to pick up or reject an incoming call (and not just mute ringing phone?). There are much better buttons on my 735 than on my handsfree, so I would like to use them for this purpose. I have checked GCs permissions in the phone, but all granted. Thanks for any tips.
  • Yes when the phone rings a screen comes up saying who is calling and you can answer it with the up arrow and reject with the down arrow.
  • PS just discovered you can use the 735 to call/ring back. To do this find the smart notification about the call and it is one of the options.

Of course at this point you probably need to pull your phone out to actually say something!

I get no caller ID (name) when someone calls, only numbers... you too?
  • Thanks for replies.

It doesnt work that way on my watch, I canNOT either reply, or reject. I only can MUTE ringing on the phone, see picture ONE. If I dont pick up the call on the phone, I also get missed call notification on the watch. My phone is LG G4, Android 6, for permissions of GC see picture TWO. Please, any ideas what to do? Thank you. EDIT: I cannot call from the smart notification either. By the way, how do I delete the big attached file here? Cannot find a way how to ...

    Driespl:
It is interesting, though, that I DO get caller ID on the watch. Maybe it has got something to do with permissions in the phone, see picture TWO.

  • It appears that the possibilities have not been exhausted yet

According to this user comment on DC Rainmaker's blog, you can answer calls on an iPhone (but apparently not on an Android phone, according to another user in reply to said comment) from a vívoactive‑HR, so it is quite likely that you can do so on a Forerunner 735XT as well. Perhaps TIMGROSE could confirm, if he's using an iPhone.

If that's the case, then – in answer to your question of “is there any way” – you can always consider switching to an iPhone as your everyday mobile handset, at least until Garmin decides to (and successfully) introduce the capability to Windows‑10 Mobile and Android phones as well.
  • Well, to switch mobile OS platform (and whole ecosystem) because of one (or to be more precise several) bug(s) by Garmin - I dont find a rational solution. If already to switch something, then the smartwatch. Or I will, as I do now, press button on a handsfree (and keep acting as a testing lab rat for Garmins rugged attempts to create something useful. Ha ha ha, smartwatch that cannot answer a phone call ...).

Just an update, this app from Google Play Store https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.azya.garmin.watchdialer , together with app or widget from Garmin Connect IQ Store, can start and end phone call from the watch (and that is work of just one small developer), so I dont see any reason, why it is not possible to just answer call on the watch.

Not offering a particular feature for use with one or more specific mobile OS platforms cannot be rationally considered a bug. It's not as if an Answer Call button is presented on the watch to the user upon an incoming call to a connected Android phone, but then fails to cause the call to be answered.

I dont find a rational solution. If already to switch something, then the smartwatch.
It's OK by me however you decide. You asked us if there is any way to do something functionally, and I'm simply glad at least one achievable way can be found and communicated to you, without undue regard for your personal values, views and priorities and consequently any constraints you impose on your IT landscape.

Could you please point me to where Garmin claimed that the Forerunner 735XT is a ‘smart watch’?

Have you tried it on your watch and phone, and confirmed that it works?

Yes, of course. Even the widget works. So I can make phone calls with just 2 keypresses on the watch. I must admit, that is a nice and useful smartwatch feature. So at least something. Even a testing lab rat has to be kept alive (usually) :-)

The rest is a little bit useless discussion, so I will reply once more only just for fun.

    See here: https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/into-sports/running/forerunner-735xt/prod541225.html

A little quote from that page: (Some features) ... "make 735XT the ultimate smartwatch for athletes. Keep your phone tucked away" ... I will just repeat myself: A smartwatch (even ultimate, ha ha ha) that cannot answer a phone call ...

Maybe athletes do not need to answer calls. Or it is only for athletes with apple products :-)

However, I am 100 % sure they will fix this one day, so you are fighting (ok, I know you are not, so lets say kind of fighting) a lost battle :-)
  • Yes I have an iPhone.

TBH I don't see that being able to "answer" my phone with my 735 is anything more an interesting quirk.

After all to really "answer" it when running, I would need to pull my phone out of my back pocket and start chatting!

It is helpful to see who is ringing when am running (it's usually my wife!) but even the ability to reject the call is hardly amazing and I normally just leave it to ring out.
It seems to take the name from my iPhone contacts. When I tried a test of ringing myself with my home landline it came up "Home" ...
  • Yes, of course. Even the widget works.
    That's great.

The first-order objectives of discussion are to share information, exchange ideas and reach decisions, as opposed to deliver practical outcomes (which would, at the very least, require additional action outside of the discussion).

Thank you very much for that, because I had not noticed that before about the FR735XT, which is headlined as a ‘GPS Running Watch with Multisport Features and Wrist-based Heart Rate’.

I use a FR235 myself, and that model is marketed by Garmin as a ‘GPS Running Watch with Wrist-based Heart Rate’ that supports ‘smart notifications’, without explicitly being a ‘smart watch’; therefore it cannot be reasonably held as failing to deliver what it ought to, by merely not making provision for the wearer to respond meaningfully to the notifications using the watch as the user interface, irrespective of what owners may want. In contrast, the FR630 and the VAHR are headlined as ‘GPS Smartwatch’.

Now we're on the same page, and you're right to criticise the FR735XT's shortcoming as a smart watch.

Maybe athletes do not need to answer calls. Or it is only for athletes with apple products :-)
I'm no athlete, but I do take the occasional call when I'm running (and I don't use an iPhone). My Android handset (OK, that's my second choice, after my beloved Windows Phone handset died) announces the name of the caller through my Bluetooth headset, and I can answer or reject incoming calls by tapping on a button on the earbuds, so not having the facility to accept the call by touching my FR235 presents no obstacle. Being able to see the name of the caller on my watch is just a geeky bonus.

However, I am 100 % sure they will fix this one day, so you are fighting (ok, I know you are not, so lets say kind of fighting) a lost battle :-)
I'm not fighting, I'm seeking clarity on whether my fellow forum members' claims are valid and accurate, and whether their expectations are reasonable outside of their own values and preconceptions (i.e. supported by published material that is not dictated by their personal say-so). I certainly don't have an agenda to stop Garmin from providing the facility to Android phone users, especially when I would neither buy nor accept an iPhone for everyday use if I have a say in the matter.

After all to really "answer" it when running, I would need to pull my phone out of my back pocket and start chatting!
If you wear a (wired or Bluetooth) headset connected to your iPhone while you're running, then I daresay you won't need to handle the handset at all to answer the call and chat. :) I always wear one, primarily to stream music (from the Pandora ‘Internet radio’ service) while I run, but it's actually also quite useful when the occasional call comes in.
