Forerunner 735XT RUNNING Lap Reset Flaw/Bug

WARNING to all people who expect to use the Forerunner 735XT for interval/speed training. Confirmed with tech support that pressing the LAP button while in pause mode will not reset your lap data. You cannot manually start your next lap unless the timer is on, i.e while you are still in your previous lap. This is a major flaw/bug. It is a standard feature of all running devices I know of. I have requested Garmin to fix this. Hopefully they will acknowledge this as a major goof and fix soon.
  • > 2. Just hit "start' once and hit "lap" to include your recovery periods - counting them as laps. Do this until end of entire workout. This is handy but effs up all the running dynamics stats as well as others such as average moving pace of entire workout as it now records all your recovery movements.

This is what I did at a track session yesterday. If I look at the lap splits on GC, I can see my dynamics stats for each lap. As we were doing different distances for the intervals I was interested in comparing cadence and stride length between shorter and longer ones. I am at a loss to understand why recording the "rests" or otherwise effects the ability to see such data?

As for number of interval sessions per week well, back in the day when could cope with it, would often be on the track 2-3 times a week when training for 800s and 1500s.

Point well taken and yes I do the same. I am just a bit anal and like to compare my overall workouts as well. I also hate seeing the long list of recovery laps gumming up the page :-). Anyway - I tried. Thought there might be global appeal.

And yes getting out twice a week is becoming harder and harder. Going to probably go forward doing the <start>run<lap><stop> double tap. Rinse and repeat.
  • Also makes you look slow when people only look at average pace :)
  • Lap reset when paused

    Hi

I agree, it's not ideal that you cannot create a lap when you are paused (like I could in my 910XT). I do not want to record my time during my passive recovery - and only use the lap button during repeats. It wouldn't even be a major update to include...when you hit the stop/start button (to stop/pause) in the new watches you are presented with Resume, Save or Delete.....all that is required is to add Lap to these options...meaning after pressing stop/start (to stop/pause) you are presented with Resume, Lap, Save or Delete...and if Lap is selected, then you can be presented with the same options again...that is Resume, Lap, Save or Delete.

C'mon Garmin, it's really important - pressing start / lap at the beginning of every repeat is very amateurish....if the decision makers run or do repeats, then they will full well know how important this is!!!!

    Cheers
    Russel
  • I do not want to record my time during my passive recovery
    A solution: auto-pause

What? How on earth do you do an interval in pause mode...?!

Use GC to plan your intervals. It's so easy and it works very well... ;-)
  • Simply stated he does not want to record Passive Recovery between intervals in the workout file. Example - 6 x 1/4 mile repeats, with indeterminate recovery time between. He only wants the 1/4 mile repeats recorded and not the time recovering between as all the overall metrics get screwed up like average cadence for example. If you could Lap while Paused you could then have Passive Recovery not recorded in the workout.

Personally I almost always use Active Recovery and record it, but today for example the heat got to me doing 1 mile repeats and I needed to walk a bit between miles to get HR down into reasonable range so my average cadence was messed up by this, and I did use a programmed workout in GC.
  • Umm if you do not record rests in interval sessions how can you compare performance session to session when they might change according to purpose of session.

Anyway it is rarely a great idea to have a totally stationary rest.

Also it has been like this for over 3 years when the 620 came out so not as if this is a sudden change.

Yeah sure. Just wondering how many people are really bothered by this given it has been this way on running watches for some years now (as I mentioned) and Garmin have not thought it necessary to offer this.
