training zones out of sync

hi all

i have set my running (and cycling) HR training in the 735 XT device/user settings in Garmin Connect (and previously synced this to my watch). I am noticing though that the 'time in zone' information from run and cycling activities doesn't seem to be aligning with these custom/manual zones i have entered. Eg; today went for a run (https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/1184514808) and in the "time in zone" info/data is indicates i spent 9:48 in Z5. In my device/user settings i have my Z5 set as 168-182pm - you can see from the run data that my max HR for the run was 163bpm only, so clearly the 'time in zone' stats is not picking up my custom HR zones.
Any ideas what is going on? I suspect the watch is referencing some other auto calculated HR zones, but i cant find any indication on this on GC or on the watch - at end of this run the watch prompted me did i wish to update my lactate training HR etc, which might be a clue.....
I'd like to override any auto (incorrect) calculated zones with the correct zones i have custom set in GC/ Device settings.....
  • I also use manual Zones for HR and I checked my watch and the Zones there are correct (although set as %Max HR and not just BPM).

I checked my run from Tuesday against Training Peaks, where I have the same zones set up and they maych. Might try pushing the zones from GC to the watch again and make sure they are correct.
  • I have experienced this same problem for both running and cycling. I could not workout how it had established that 98% of my 45 minute ride was in zone 4 when looking at the data there were only 5 seconds in this zone.

I have reset and re-synced my training zones to the device, I will find out later if this has changed anything but am doubtful as values stored on the watch were only 1-2 bpm different per zone to the values in Garmin Connect.
  • HR zone sync

Thanks Chimpware.. that made me think...i pushed my custom HR zones to my watch again...what i was missing/failed to do, was to then go into the watch settings and my stats/ user profile/HR/ Zones and Sport Zones and then select BPM as my selected zones.....I'd assumed by changing my zones in GC that it would push and select these custom zones on the watch...it doesn't, it stays as the default max HR% until you select BPM zones on the watch directly. Hopefully sorted now i understand!
  • That's interesting, it does select %Max HR on the watch for me as well, but the Max HR they are based on and the %Max HR are transferred and therefore the zones match GC.

Changing zones in the watch as well

I added a HR Zone run profile in Garmin Connect, synced up and went for a run with alerts. The HRZ was completely off from what I put in. Looking at the breakdown, it went off the standard settings. Yesterday, I double checked my run profile HRZ (no changes needed to be made), programmed in a workout via GC, synced up and went for the run. Again, the watch kept sending me alerts because the HRZ was the default one-not the run profile I made. This was really frustrating as the upper limit of the majority of the zone I wanted was 18 bpm higher than what the default was...constant alerts throughout the run.
I did some searching and saw that I can make the changes on the watch itself. I went to Menu > My Stats > User Profile > HR > Sport Heart Rate > Running. I filled in my LTHR then went down to Zones. I had to adjust all of those to what I wanted.
I am hoping that this will work now and I'll find out on my run this evening. I left my basic HRZ (not going into Sport Heart Rate setting) the default. If it doesn't work, then that will be the next thing I change.

Updating Heart Rate Zones through watch worked but not via Garmin Connect

The above process worked for my run last night. Apparently the zones set up in Garmin Connect did nothing despite syncing afterwards. I had to go into the watch and update my run profile heart rate zones through there. I haven't tried cycling with the modified zones yet but I would think I would need to go through the same process.
  • That's strange because for me the HR ranges as well as power zones copied over fine and are set how I set them up in GC.
