Can I use swim hrm for triathlon with the new 735xt?

Hi. I've just purchased the new 735xt with the integrated wrist hrm and I want to know if I can use it in triathlon activity mode using the swim hrm (not the tri hrm as I know this isn't suitable for pool use). Would it automatically change over to the wrist hrm once I'm out of the water and in transition? (I'm guessing not) or will the swim hrm continue to record bike/run but without stride length etc. could do with knowing before I buy one.

Sorry if I'm being a bit dumb but new to this.

Thanks in advance Wendy
  • Yes you can use the HRM-Tri. If you are running a multi-sport event then this will be used for all parts of it, rather than optical (unless you stop to turn it off mid way through the event). You can set the watch up for a tri so it records each activity with the metrics for those activites if that makes sense, so you'll get running metrics on the run, swimming metrics on the swim etc.

  • Yes the HRM-Swim works like a "normal" HR strap out of the water but you won't get the running dynamics except cadence which would then come from the watch itself. I have used it on a treadmill for instance.

Sorry for being somewhat ignorant myself but would an HRM-Tri work better for a woman than a man in the pool given might be less likely to slide about if under a swimming costume?

Thanks TIMGROSE. That was my first thought but then read that the HRM-Tri strap is NOT resistant to chlorine and will quickly desintagrate with pool use. Thanks for clarifying about the HRM-Swim.

The HRM-Tri is not designed for regular pool training (i.e. don't wear it three times per week to your masters class). It is definitely fine for occasional pool use, let's say a few times per month.
