Strava Suffer Score

Anybody tried this yet?

When I remember to check before saving a run, my value (for running - not tried cycling yet) seems to be a bit lower than I am seeing on Strava itself.

Have checked and got the same max HR set in the GC app and on Strava.
However in Strava I have just got "based on max HR" where in the app have put in arbitrary numbers for the zone boundaries. I wonder if this makes a difference.

It also a little confusing in that I assume the Strava zone figures are the upper bound on the zones so say if put Zone 1 =120 then anything up to 120 is zone 1?

I see the HR settings on the app for general use have 6 figures so much clearer to see what are the lower and upper boundaries for each zone.

Hey Tim, I am a little confused by which "app" you mean (CIQ or iOS) but here is what I do to match my suffer score on Strava and CIQ:

    1) Set Strava HR to my max HR (188) and let it calculate my zones (notice that at this point you cannot see the zones on the same page at Strava.com)
    2) Go to either Strava iOS App or Strava.com and click on any activity that uses HR and specifically go to the HR page. over there you see your exact zones displayed (in my case 0-122, 122-152, 152-167, 167-182, <182
    3) Go to CIQ Strava Suffer score app's settings (either Garmin Express or Mobile) and enter the zones from 2)

Is this what you did and it doesn't match?
  • This is also what DCR recommends: "The app works by evaluating heart rate zones to determine your suffering level. Thus, you do need to ensure your Garmin device’s heart rate zones match that of Strava. Otherwise when you upload your workout the two scores won’t match. In many ways, it’s kinda like with the TrainingPeaks metrics and ensuring that your FTP levels match on the Garmin Device, Garmin Connect, and Training Peaks. Same-same concept here."

  • I meant on the iOS Connect app and then in the Connect IQ section for the 735 you can configure zones for the Strava Suffer Score data field "app".

In Strava itself (https://www.strava.com/settings/performance ) then I have my HR zones "Based on max HR" although I see you can set custom zones there but it only seems to have 4 customisable points whereas the settings on the iOS app have 5.

The normal Garmin HR settings allow 6 values to be set but I suspect it ignores them as there would be no point in having customisable zones for the data field.

So I think my max HR is set the same on both. Less clear whether the sub maximal ones are the same however.
  • The CIQ app is designed in such a way that you must have a value set for each of the HR zones. These are zone boundaries, so as an example, Zone 1 is anything from 0 up to the value you provide. The steps KALAMARIOS lists below are a good approach.
  • Heart Rate data not available in Strava and TrainingPeaks after a swim session?
