Data fields and OHR on 735

I'm thinking of selling my Garmin 520 bike GPS and getting a 735xt, mainly for Mountain Biking usage.

I wonder if those with a 735 can give feedback on the following points please;

Q1 - On my 520 I use the 'total ascent' data field a lot (total number of feet climbed during an activity) - is there the same (or similar) data field available of the 735?

Q2 - I'd plan to use a HR chest strap for any real exercise monitoring, but want to know if the OHR works ok for resting HR, general daily activity tracking and sleep tracking? I've read some reviews of the Garmin 235 which seem to suggest that it's OHR is very poor even for non-exercise usage and I wanted to see if the 735 is any better.

Cheers!!
  • The only "native" data field for Elevation related data is Elevation!
    Don't forget this device does not have a barometeric altimeter so if that stuff interests you then stick with your 520 for biking at least.

    I've got a 235 as well and initial impressions is that OHR will work as well as the 235 (or not!) on this one.

    Like you, I normally use a HR strap for actual exercises - you really need to if are interested in making the most of the advanced running features.

    I like the idea though of having OHR as a "backup" say if I forget my strap.

    RHR algorithm seems to have changed as it no longer seems to a simple minimum HR determination. As such I am finding my overnight RHR to be a little higher than I might expect just on min HR. More understanding of this required I think.
  • Total ascent data field

    I downloaded a data field for the FR630 called Total Ascent, which I found to do the job pretty well while I was out and about. You'd be able to get that field for the FR735XT too. Depends how accurate you need it while you're out training.
