Update EPO without desktop app

Is there a way to update the EPO without needing to use the desktop app? It is a chore and time-consuming having to connect and sync the watch to my PC almost every time before I go running. It would be much better if this was able to be done over a sync with the mobile app, for instance.

    Customer support insisted that it should update via Garmin Connect (mobile app), not just Garmin Express (desktop app), and gave me instructions on deleting the EPO bin file to get the Garmin Connect EPO update working again, but the steps didn't work. So after some digging around I found a suggestion to connect to Wi-Fi directly via the watch. Which I did (at Settings > Wi-Fi > Connect to Wi-Fi), and then the EPO updated. So in my case and perhaps the cases of others having this issue, the answer to updating the EPO on the Garmin Forerunner 645M without Garmin Express is to connect to Wi-Fi on the watch.
