645 vs Venu gps

I have a 645 and a Venu that I interchange with running or mountain biking. The Venu is my primary day-to-day watch. The 645 gives better fitness metrics but does not record intensity minutes. The bigger issue is that the gps distances are pretty different between the two. I have a local mtb trail that is about 4.5 miles long (pretty sure). The Venu consistently measures in the 4.4-4.6 mile range and the 645 consistently measures it in 3.7-3.9 mile range. Today I wore both of them on the ride and the measurements were 4.48 and 3.89 miles (respectively). Even though the Venu got the gps later and so missed tracking the first part of the ride. I don't get why this is happening or how to fix it (if possible). Do they not use the same gps?

  • GPS in smartwatch supposed to give you estimated location due to its nature of using absolute positioning method. You cannot get 100% position in another word. You can even try to use the same watch but the result will have slight differences (standard deviation) with one another. If you want the most accurate distance measurement, try to draw your route in google maps, or use a smartwatch that has the multiband GNSS features. Hope that answers your question. Cheers.

  • The 645 is supposed to record intensity minutes. Do you have TrueUp enabled so that Garmin Connect can sync data between watches?

Try to find an accurate measurement of that MTB trail before you decide which one is (more) accurate. Consult the owner's website or map it out in a few platforms that map trails, like Komoot for instance. If the GPS signal is blocked by trees and/or there are significant elevation changes, any watch will come up short. A Stryd foot pod might do better.
