"Exercise Load" Activity List only records when the watch has crashed?

I run with my FR 645M 3-4x per week, and after each run it gives me a recovery time and adds to my Training Load (it doesn't seem to add my bike rides recorded on my E 520+, but I believe that's down to the E520+ not supporting it, no worries there!). However, the only times I get an "Exercise Load" entry recorded is on the (relatively rare) occasions that my FR 645M crashes and resets mid-run. See below:

Training Status Extract - only one run has an Exercise Load entry

So there are runs on 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16 April, and on 21, 23, 26 April that have recorded a VO2Max entry, but the run on 19 April didn't record a VO2Max entry, and did register an Exercise Load score. All runs were executed in the same way, via FR 645M "run". Some were workouts, and some were free runs.  Each time it was without a chest strap (wrist-based HR only), apart from 23 April when I wore a chest strap. However, on the 19 April, the watch crashed and reset mid-run.

I'm not sure what causes the occasional crashes, but each time it happens I get an Exercise Load score and no VO2Max estimate. For the record, the "Primary Benefit" tag appears to be accurate each time it happens!

Should I be getting Exercise Load scores from my FR 645M, and if so, how come it's only happening when the watch has crashed and reset itself?

Many thanks.

  • I don't have an answer to this, but I wanted to chime in only to mention that I've noticed this same strange behavior.

For me, it's happened not only on complete crashes, but other, less fatal, events where the watch seemed to have run out of resources mid-run and removed all of my Garmin IQ data fields (it replaces them with elapsed time fields). In these cases, the watch still allows me to complete the run, but some of the normal metrics are missing like VO2Max. Then later, when I look in Garmin Connect, I see the Exercise Load score like you do.

I suspect that exposing the training load in this case is NOT really supposed to be happening, and it is just a quirk of a less-tested Garmin Connect flow. It doesn't really harm anything. Just a guess, maybe someone else can provide a real answer Slight smile
