Sending an old activity from history back to the watch

I've read on the difficulties (and workarounds) for "racing an activity" when I've got it on the watch.

And I can't believe you can't simply select an old activity from history on the mobile app and hit "send to device".  However...

On the website you can do "send to device".  But it doesn't seem to do anything.  Is that because I'm assuming it will happen wirelessly (similarly to the way apps are installed)?  Do I need to physically connect the watch to my PC to transfer like this? And if so, do I need to install the Express app too?

  • Responding to my own post - I think the only route here is to connect to a PC and transfer across the activity.  I've done this just now by moving an old .fit activity to my watch into the "activities" folder, and it appears I can select it to be "raced" now.

  • You can initiate a sync from the Controls menu of the watch itself: long press the light button and select Sync. (If it's not there, you'll need to enable it in Settings > Controls.) If you have a Wi-Fi connection, the watch should contact Garmin's servers directly. Alternatively, you may initiate the sync from the phone.

I've done this for courses to be navigated, not activities to be raced, but I would expect it to work the same. There are companion phone and watch apps to transfer a course directly from the phone, so there may be similar for activities.
