Extreme battery drain on 645M followed by issues connecting to Garmin Connect App

Hi!

Forerunner 645M working normally until yesterday, when I noticed it had died in the middle of the day.  I recharged it up to 100% and then about four hours later, got a beep that the battery was low.

Earlier that day I realized that my phone had been left downstairs overnight and battery went to 0%. I charged my phone and brought it with me . . . didn't see any issues then.

I searched this forum and followed suggestions, observing battery drain after each step:

Yesterday:

  • Made sure Connect and Connect IQ apps were updated.
  • Restarted watch,
  • Turned it all the way off and left it off for a bit.
  • Left it charging overnight — except my husband derailed that . . . I think it was charging for about four hours -- when I woke up it was at 60% or so but he'd been to bed for a few hours.

This morning:

  • Charged back up to 100%
  • Made sure screen auto-off was set to shortest time (8 sec)
  • Turned off all features except time and wrist HR.
  • Removed all connections to Wifi networks
  • Removed all Connect IQ apps

NOTE: All of this was working fine until yesterday.

It appears to be running Software Version 7.10 (271a84f) - I know it's supposed to automatically update and no idea when that last happened.

Here is how extreme the battery drain is. For the numbers below I've intentionally left the watch alone except to grab the battery %.

After doing all of the above, charged back up to 100%.

9:45 am - Removed from charger at 100% -- took normal amount of time to charge.

9:52 am - 98%

10:03 am - 92%

10:15 - 87%

At 10:15 am I turned off Bluetooth on my phone - green phone icon on the Controls is flashing to show that there's no connection.

10:20 - 85%

10:25 - 84%

11:00 - 74%

At 11:00 I turned off the wrist heart rate monitor.  I've also been mostly sitting this whole time so the watch now has nothing to do but keep time.

11:30 - 66%

Tried the one thing I could think of that I hadn't yet done -- full factory reset.

Now the Garmin Connect app keeps timing out when I go to any of the Settings screens:  "Network Connection Error" or "Garmin Connect Experiencing an Outage" or "Device Communication Error" -- my Garmin device shows that it IS connected.

Tried uninstall / reinstall Garmin Connect.  It found my account and the data that had been synched earlier today.  I was able to re-pair the device and it looked like the Garmin app had saved the settings and re-synched them to the de vice.

I tried taking a short walk. It did capture the activity data just fine.

But it's now 1:25 pm and the battery is down to 21%.

Running out of ideas . . . doesn't seem to be caused by Bluetooth, Wifi connection issues or by any other function that I've been able to turn off.

  • Just to update this thread . . . after about 48 hours it started working normally again.

So if you're reading this thread because you have experienced the same problem I suggest just continuing to recharge it over a few days to see if it resolves itself before panicking.

If this happens again, I'll go ahead and make sure everything's updated, restarted and fully synced but then just give it some time. It could be that some process gets hung up that takes a few days to time out and then reset itself.

Of course, I had just about settled on purchasing an Instinct 2 to replace mine when it started behaving normally.
