645 Music regularly crashes and restarts during activity

Hi,

I've been using a new 645 Music for a couple of weeks and out of the 5 activities that I have done, the watch has crashed 3 times and restarted. During each of these activities I'm running and listening to music. When it crashes both the activity and music stop. After reboot I can resume the activity and restart music.

In my media folder there is a GARMIN folder which contains a ERR_LOG.BAK, which seems to correlate with when the latest crash happened. Its contents are.

Is there a fix for this?

Thanks

  • Sorry you're having trouble. I have a solution that's worked for me, but you might not like it. :)

When my watch crashes like that, often it's when I've added a lot of music to the watch. I think somewhere, somehow, certain music tracks can get corrupted as they're being added to the watch, and the more music I add, the more likely it is there's going to be a messed-up file. So I reset the watch from scratch: Go to Settings, System, Reset, Delete Data and Reset Settings. (You may have to do this a couple of times to get all the data deleted.)  Then reload everything.

It's a pain in the rear to reload everything, I realize. If you have a watch face you've configured, you have to reload the watch face and configure it again. But deleting all data and resetting usually fixes things for me. And I try not to add too much music to the watch at a time. Today I added a ton of files, against my better judgment. I'll see if my watch crashes on my run.

  • Well, I jinxed myself, because my watch crashed after 3 of the first 4 songs on my run. Finally I gave up and ran without music.

Time to reset the watch. <sigh>

  • Thanks for the reply. I also suspect its related to some song/file the watch is trying to play. I might delete a load and add maybe 10 at a time every couple of weeks to see if I can find the problematic file. Today's crash happened just as a song ended so trying to load another song looks likely. Very annoying though. I've exactly the same songs on a vivoactive 3 music and it never crashed once in two years.

  • I tried deleting all songs. For some strange reason one could not be deleted and took a reboot of watch to allow me to delete it. Then I copied the files directly (not copying the one that would not delete) using windows file explorer rather than through Garmin Express. I know file structure will be flat compared to by artist and album if I had used Garmin Express but songs play regardless. Fingers crossed no more crashes.

  • Have done 4 run activities since and no crashes.

  • I have downloaded my songs via File Explorer too, and have not had crashes. I wonder if downloading via Garmin Express is the culprit. (I had songs on my watch that not only did not show up on the watch, but could not be deleted via File Explorer. Only the complete reset of all data removed it. Annoying.)
