GPS/pace suddenly very off

I've had the 645 for years now and always run the same route (Chicago Lakefront Path) and have never had trouble with GPS or instant pace because it's clear of any buildings in the city. However, in the last couple weeks/months, the pace indicated on my watch can swing between 2 full minutes while I am running the same actual pace. Sometimes I'll run about 7:30 and it will say I'm running 6:30 one second and 8:30 the next. It never used to do this. Is it possible that the GPS chip degrades over time? Not sure what the sudden issue would be.

  • Same here. I’ve had mine for a year - 1 new and 1 refurbished from Garmin. It’s always been buggy but never with outdoor pace. This past week it’s been defaulting to the accelerometer while outdoors I think. I ran with my 235 on the same arm twice and my pace was stable, and accurate based on my own feel on a known route. To test this I started swinging my arm quickly for 10 strides or so and the pace displays a faster time while the 235 does not. It’s never been within 2 minutes of my treadmills pace while indoors for the entire year.  The odd part is that the distance is accurate. There is a mailbox precisely at the 1 mile mark from my house and all 5 Garmins I’ve had report this as the 1 mile mark, even the 645. My pace showed 8:15-8:20 for the entire first mile but my lap time showed close to 9:00 on the last 2 runs.

  • Also- I let the watch do a “GPS soak” every time and it reports being connected via the beep /notification.

  • Mine has started to do funky things. It seems to think it has GPS signal right out my door when it always took 20-30 seconds of standing still to acquire the green gps notification. Now sometimes it turns green but doesn't say it has acquired it. Then when I look at my trace it is off for the first 1-1.5 miles. It's especially bad in my trails and completely loses track now. What is strange is the laps seem ok and miles are recorded but the gps track is off it's rocker.
