Max HR reading using HRM-Pro and FR645

I have recently purchased a HRM-Pro strap for treadmill use and after one medium effort interval run on it my watch gave me a "New Max HR Detected" value of 193. My HR never rose above 156 during the 30 minute session. Previously I had my max HR set at 178. Could this new reading be correct? I mostly trail run and have never really felt like 178 was my true max as I periodically hit 174-178 on the trail.

Age:51 male, between 20-30 miles per week. Resting HR average of 60, Lactate Threshold  of 8:57/mi. -160/bpm.

  • Could this new reading be correct?

It's unlikely.  Your body deliberately limits your heart rate as you get older to stop you damaging it so having a high rate isn't necessarily a good thing.  Average max rate for a 50 year old is about 170 so at 178 you were already on the high side. It's more likely a measurement error, which you can check by seeing if it reoccurs. It is possible as we're all different but that would also mean your lactate threshold was wrong.

For comparison, I'm the same age as you, run about 20 miles per week (but also cycle), have a resting HR of 44, and a lactate threshold of 6:29 (161 bpm), although I suspect that's got worse since lockdowns started!

  • Thanks, I wouldn't have thought it would have extrapolated a measurement higher than one achieved but thought I'd ask as I could not find anything in the manuals or online regarding it and I really don't want to set my zones that high. I am fairly confident in my lactate threshold reading.
