Live Tracking won't start after 7.00 update

Since getting the firmware update to 7.00 Live Tracking will only work if started manually from the phone. It will not start automatically when an activity starts on the watch. Have checked the permissions on the phone, restarted both phone and watch but consistently get a message that Live Track has failed. This is clearly a firmware problem as it worked fine until the update. My wife got the same update a few days later than me and her tracking has also failed since installing it.

  • Update

I've just spoken to Garmin support in Germany who confirmed this appears to be a bug in the firmware and have escalated the problem to the developers.

  • Wow, an upgrade silently disables a safety feature. That's some regression testing they must be doing at Garmin HQ. I'll disable automatic updates until further notice as I use LiveTrack a lot... Thanks for the heads-up!

  • I have the same issues, and what I did I just disabling and enabling the LiveTrack feature again from the garmin app in my android phone and  it works again without issues.

  • Glad to hear it works for you. I'd already tried that and also uninstalling and reinstalling the app, but it still won't start for me.

  • Update 2

LiveTrack works fine with my old Forerunner 920XT so it has nothing to do with the phone or Garmin Connect. Another long call to support in Munich and they are finally taking it more seriously and have opened a ticket, which it seems they didn't do after my previous call. But, when I asked how to regress to the previous firmware version I was told that isn't possible as they don't keep older versions on their server when a new one is released. Frankly, that is beyond belief!

I simply cannot believe that Garmin can release an update that breaks a vital safety function without proper testing and don't react even when they're made aware of the problem. After 12 years I'm ready to abandon Garmin and start looking for alternatives.

  • Same experience. Did uninstall of everything as advised and no success. Should also be noted that the issue extends beyond Livetrack Failed, at least for me, where incident detection is unable to send. Extremely concerning and hope issue is resolved soon. My phone is a Pixel 3a XL.

  • Somehow on mine device works after disabling and enabling the functionality but after finish the activity, livetracking keeps running forever so I must stopped manually.

  • Same problem here. LiveTrack did work perfect, but after the update it doesn't work anymore.

  • Odd. For me, no matter what I try, it won't start automatically when an activity starts. But if I start LiveTrack manually from the Connect app it will stop automatically when the activity ends.

  • This is the way I'm using the LiveTrack capabilities. Haven't tested incident detection when connected via this approach.
