Multi-Sport Activities as one GPS File?

Is there a way to record a combination of "types" of activities in one overall activity?  I want to record a bike ride to a trailhead and then a trail run loop and then the bike ride home all as one continuous activity, displayed on one map as a single gps course.  If not, is there a way to combine separate .fit files into one continuous .fit file?  Even if I make it over these hurdles, I assume it won't display properly on Strava as a multi-sport activity anyway?  Is it even possible to display a singular Run/Bike activity on Strava?  Where is Anton Krupicka when you need him?  Any insight would be greatly appreciated.  I assume triathletes must need a function like this, no?

  • The Garmin multipsport watches do this automatically. Or you can do it using something like  FIT File Tools file combiner or Fit File Repair Tool.

So it will just know when I get off my bike and start running and it will flip over to the "run" activity type and record all the requisite metrics for that activity?  Followed by a slightly stupider question: is the Forerunner 645 music considered a "multisport" watch?  I know it has a lot of options for activity types...

    • On a multisport watch you'd press lap to mark the transition, just like on a triathlon. It automates the transition SWIM  > TRANSITION > CYCLING > TRANSITION > RUN. On a 645 you'd have to press stop/save then start a new activity to mark the "transition" to a different sport. Then you would have to "fix" it using tools such as Fit File Repair tool.

The 645 music is not multisport. In the current Forerunner lineup, the 745 and the 945 have this ability.

      Thank you!

    • Just to add to that, with the multisport models (which also include the older 735 and 935, as well as the Fenixes), you can program the sequence of activities. When I had a Fenix 3, I would record exactly your scenario: a Bike - Run - Bike, where I would bike to a trailhead, run, and bike back. Switching to the 645, I just stopped recording the bike rides, which were pretty short in my case. I don't miss the multisport. It's been a couple of years now, but I think I didn't care for the way the activities had to be filtered when I wanted to compare trail runs, so I ended up splitting the activities anyway (which can be done right in Connect, when you have a multisport watch).
