Accuracy of elevation gain, the Garmin 645 Music vs. the Garmin Edge Touring Plus

Which is more accurate in recording elevation gain, the Garmin 645 Music or the Garmin Edge Touring Plus? On a recent ride, for example, the 645 Music showed an elevation gain of 238 meters, while the Edge Touring Plus showed 224 meters, a difference of 14 meters. Which device is more accurate?

On another day: Garmin 645 Music Elevation Gained 257 m.; Garmin Edge Touring] Elevation Gained 248 m.

All readings have Elevation Readings enabled in Garmin Connect.

  • 645 isnt good in that, i had 2 of FR645 (one cracked = warranty replacement).

Your diffirence in elevation isnt bad at all. If edge doesnt have barometric multimeter or have autocorrection with gps it will be more accurate.

Ok you can do calibration manually, but when you go a lot higher than lower barometric altimeter goes a bit crazy and elevation gain you get is really not correct. I see it on strava when I press correct elevation with strava data on FR 645 sometimes i get about 150 - 200m ! diffirence when gained 300m of elevation on 50km ride, with Fenix (correction on) there is couple of meters diffirence but this is 100% acceptable.

    Example on 645 :

    what 645 register :

    with strava correction :

My yesterday bike trip with 2 watches (really not bad when you compare it with that above) :

Really 645 should get option to disable barometric altimeter on activity or autocorection with gps.

  • Thank you. This is very helpful.
