Vo2 Max Observation

Hello Runners, Garmin.

I have a question regarding Vo2 Max. My number has gone up as expected as I've progressed this year and over all it seems to be working as advertised. I realize V02 Max number and Fitness indicator most likely considers multiple data points in addition to pace, however pace seems to have the largest effect on if the watch reports a increase or drop in fitness and the Vo2 max number.

However, is it to much to expect the app to know the difference when I choose to run at a slower pace than I normally do versus slowing my pace because I'm tired?

My Normal pace is between 8:30 and 9:30 over 3.5 miles. Recently, I decided to slow my pace to around 10:15 and for the last several runs, each mile is  at or below that pace, yet Vo2 number is falling, only a point so far. Despite my heart rate for the slower runs is lower as I'd expect. If I continue to run slower and my average heart steadily decreases over time, can I expect  the app will  adjust the Vo2 number and "fitness"  in a positive direction?

Is the only way to increase Vo2 max number is to continually run faster Miles?

  • however pace seems to have the largest effect

Actually, it's pace against heart rate. Pace alone is not enough to do an estimate.

If I continue to run slower and my average heart steadily decreases over time, can I expect  the app will  adjust the Vo2 number and "fitness"  in a positive direction?

That depends on if your REAL fitness will improve or not.

Is the only way to increase Vo2 max number is to continually run faster Miles?

No. Improving cardiovascular fitness is a complex matter, and trying to run faster and faster can be counterproductive. Consult an experienced coach or have a look at some publicly available training plans on how to improve your fitness level.
