Garmin Forerunner 655 Release

Is the Garmin Forerunner 655 about to be introduced?   The Amazon price on the 645M has plummeted and the 645 is pushed down to the bottom of sports watches on the Garmin.com site.

  • Hope so. I just tried out a VA4 and decided to wait for the successor to my current 645.

  • I wonder if they'd then run into the same problem as the last cycle.  The 645 came out a year before the 945 and 245, then a lot of people complained that the 245 had lots of things that the 645 had, for a better price, while the 645 didn't have some of the newest bells and whistles.  That said, I'd love to see the map feature that's on the 945 put on a 655 (or even 255).

  • So, thinking about this more, will it even happen? Or is the FR245 the successor with the 6## series stopping? I like my FR645, but recently tested out a VA4. The VA4 is not for me, but now I want music and pulseOX and the other "newer" features. I think I could get everything I want in a 245, but am I going to get that and the 655 then come out and mean that I took a step back to the 245M? This is frustrating. There was a lot of talk about a 655 up until right before CES in January and then radio silence. Not a word has been said that I can find. I don't think it is because of the pandemic, since the chatter stopped in January, but I could be wrong.

My dilemma: Get a 245M now or keep waiting for a 655?

  • I bought a Forerunner 645M the week they were launched and have been very happy with it. However I was hoping we would see a 655 by now.  I am fairly confident we will at some point as there are still features over and above the 245 that it could have for those who run, but don't want/need multisport.

I had hoped we would see the 655 in Q1 this year (just based on how long the 645M has been out and some of the new features being rolled out) however that has been and gone, and all the rumors have mentioned watches such as the 7xx multisport but no real mentions of a Forerunner 655 (other than wishful thinking).

I would happily upgrade my Forerunner 6xx every 2 years, but am now deciding whether to upgrade to a Fenix 6Pro Titanium instead as I am not anticipating we will see a Forerunner 655 this year. I bought a Fenix 6 Pro titanium when they launched but sent it back due to a screen issue, but this weekend may see me order one again.

For me, it is more a want than a need, but I run 6-7 days a week so am happy to invest in something I use every day.

  • I had a post here with a link to a site which gave an expected date for the 655 but the post has been removed. You can decide yourself what that means Slight smile

  • indeed, we shall see, but in my experience the moderators have removed those types of posts and no new product has arrived afterwards. As much as I want to hope a 655 is launched in May/June, we won't know until it actually happens, therefore rather than continually wait I will go back to the Fenix 6 for now, and see if the latest firmwares/hardware have improved some of the earlier issues.

  • I agree, there have been several sites that predict when new watches/GPSs come out.  I used to follow one GPS Rumor site until I realized it was mostly guess work based on prior history or something another rumor site posted.  Those with actual information have non-disclosure agreements so can't and won't say anything.  The only time they really have anything worth noting is if Garmin or a vendor accidentally post a new watch/GPS on their website early, then pull it.  But those few times are usually when it's only about a week out.

  • They make guesses that are usually wrong, but they get the money from the ads they display!

  • I see in the email from Garmin with their special offers, their site has watches ranging from the fenix 6 pro solar as the most expensive down to the vivofit 4 as the cheapest. No mention of the 645 at all which I'll take to mean as a product it's dead to them!

  • I have no inside knowledge but I doubt Garmin will kill the 6xx series purely because its Garmins top of the range running watch.

Firstly loads of people (myself included) don't want to be running with a brick aka the Fenix range on their wrists. There's imho a massive market for a small light dedicated running watch.

Secondly look at the FR2xx price point are Garmin really going to be putting there crown jewel features in to something so 'cheap? Baring in mind that Garmin is pursing an increasingly Applesque pricing policy ie.... punitive.

I'm thinking that the pandemic is having some sort of negative impact on release schedules..... but we'll see!
