Auto Update Apps not auto updating apps

In Garmin Connect Mobile under Devices-my645-General settings is a switch:

Auto Update Apps

When syncing, get automatic app updates in the Connect IQ Store.

On a run recently I had a complete lockup on a data field, I discovered after getting home that the data field had an update showing under Activities, Apps and More - Data Fields.  I repeatedly sync'ed my 645, and the data field never updated.

It only updated if I manually looked at that menu level, selected, and then selected to update, and then resync

Does this feature/switch to Auto Update Apps not work, or do I misunderstand the function?

If it matters, I have also installed Connect IQ Android app as I was encouraged to do.

I'm on a Google Pixel 2 XL (Android), fully updated Android, all Android apps up to date, etc.

If this doesn't work, it's a bit ridiculous.  My phone auto-updates all apps without manual intervention, and it would seem the intent of this feature/switch on the Garmin Connnect IQ side.

Help? Thoughts?

  • I've got exactly this problem with Sony Xperia and Fenix 6. Seems rather odd that Garmin isn't capable of fixing a simple problem like this.

  • If people only complain about it in this user forum, Garmin wouldn't even know that anyone is having an issue.

Clearing the cache and force-stopping the Connect and Connect IQ apps might help. Failing that, clear the storage and uninstall/reinstall.

Each Android version seems to get more restrictive with background data, so that could also be the problem.

  • It also doesn't work with my Vivoactive 4, even after reinstalling the app.

No sense to have this option when it doesn't work
