How to solve definitively the problem of freezing of the fr645 sw 6.20

When upgrading to a new version it is always advisable to perform a hard reset, this always applies to any electronic device.

Who on the forum writes that he has freezing problems did not do a hard reset but a soft reset or other methods

Garmin's assistance had advised me to do a hard reset but reading on the forum that the problem was not solved I did nothing .

The other day I did a real hard reset and now all the problems have been solved

I charged the battery 100% Monday 9 and this morning (Tuesday 17) the battery is 12%. I made 6 runs for a total of 8 hours with GPS, cardio strap and footpod.

Instructions in Italian by Garmin support

Da strumento spento, tenere premuti i tasti Start/Stop + Back/Lap.

With the instrument switched off, keep the Start / Stop + Back / Lap keys pressed.

Turn on the device with the Power button and then release it while holding Start / Stop + Back / Lap.

Release Start / Stop once you hear the first beep, then release Back / Lap on the second beep.

At this point the product will be reset to the original factory settings and it will be necessary to reset the language and subsequently all other personal data

For me hard reset did not solve the problem. And I definatelly done hard reset, because everything was wiped out (stats, activities, I needed to set it up again etc.).

  • explain to me how did you do the hard reset?

I made a Master Reset, using the buttons of the watch (not the menus) and my watch never freeze again.

Procedure as advised by garmin support was:

    Clearing User Data-

You can restore all of the device settings to the factory default values.

NOTE: This deletes all user-entered information and history.

    - Hold the power button.
    - Select Yes to turn off the device.
    - Hold the top right Run button, and the Down Button at the same time.
    - While holding the keys, hold the Power button to turn on the device.
    - After the first tone, release the Top Right Run button.
    - After the second tone, release the Down Button.

And still freezes occured. Note that I don't have problems with short activities (many 30min - 1h biking activities were ok). But when activity was longer than 1.5h (mostly hiking) then I had 4 of ouf 6 activities frozen at the end (one also froze when I have done "resume later" - this caused also removing half activity).

  • Former Member Can you please tell us what is a HARD RESET for you? Because you said that we made it wrong but you did not describe the process adopted by you.

An user (Former Member posted in another topic that he did a Master Reset and it worked... The steps he described was:

    . Turn the watch OFF

. Press and hold BACK bottom

. Press and hold LIGHT bottom

    . Keep holding both bottoms

.On the first TONE / BEEP release the LIGHT bottom and keep holding BACK bottom

.On the second TONE / BEEP release the BACK bottom

The watch will then restart and then just configure it...

If anyone else tried this method please report here...

  • I did the same and the watch freezes again.

I called Garmin support and they have no solution. they send me an new one but it happened again.

  • Same as what they said to me! Have you tried using the back button to get back to the watch face? I've had no freezes since I read about that workaround.

  • Just because it's worked for you, it doesn't follow that it will work for all. Or that it won't come back. Many people have had their watched replaced (which presumably were hard reset by Garmin) and still have had the error return. The reset behaviour you describe is possibly similar to the fix from deleting the FIT files: the bug is removed only to reappear at a later date.

  • This watch worked fine for more than a year until fw 6.2 was installed on my watch. Having to perform a hard reset after a firmware upgrade should not be necessary and you lose all you data on the watch (e.g. totals and personal records). Previous firmware updates worked fine without having to hard reset, so what went wrong here Garmin?
