Marathon with music - huge battery drain

Just ran a marathon in 3.34 hours and watch flashed up with only 10% battery left at 28 km.  I had music on for that time but then switched it off.  Watch died in the final 500 m.  It's a music watch so I expect to be able to run a marathon with music up to at least around 4 hours.  No other features turned on, no chest straps or other add ons.  Watch was 100% as I set off.  In July I ran the Gold Coast marathon.  Recorded 3 km walk to the start line, 3.36 marathon with music and 3 km walk back (no music).  Battery was super low but it recorded it all.  Not sure why 2 months later it died so soon.  I am up to date with version 6.20.  Anyone else experienced this?  The watch was purchased in April last year.

Just run a 3:52 marathon with music and OHR. It showed 26% battery left after finish but then hung and after a while turned off without any battery left.

  • Yes exactly simliar behaviour. Also bought the Watch April 2018 and was always able to run a Marathon about 3:15 to 3:30 with always enough battery left at the finish. But since a while i get more and more in trouble with the battery it always remarks me now with this 10% message when i hit the 3 hours mark. Of course with music enabled. Btw. i still use the same headphones to no changes there....

  • I bought a 645m from Garmin direct last July. The battery rapidly deteriorated and Garmin replaced it. The next one was much better.  I am suspicious that the Chinese factories where they source their components might not always be the highest quality. Sometimes they are poor from the off, sometimes they'll suddenly degrade after being fine. That said, batteries do degrade normally with time and depending how heavily used and charged.  Standard industry practice is to replace under guarantee if the charge is less than 80% of expected which for a 645m means four instead of 5 hours running with music.  If you are getting less than that and still in guarantee they should replace it for you.

There may also be firmware problems with the latest releases but these are difficult to untangle from the underlying hardware.  For reference, on the latest fw, I get about 4.5 hours running with GPS (no GLONASS or Galileo), music, navigation, HRM-Run strap and Tempe.
