Has anybody tried an ultrasonic cleaner?

Ultrasonic cleaners have long been used for jewelry as they give a really nice shine, better than you can get with a cloth alone because they clean even the most microscopic dirt.  They also clean in places you can't easily reach with a cloth. The manufacturers of ultrasonic cleaners say that you can clean a watch if it is fully waterproof (30m or more). Presumably the 5 ATM spec of the 645 translates to 50m so in theory it should be ok.

But I wanted to check first if anybody has tried this on a Garmin Forerunner with a barometer?  Did it work or did it destroy the device? Is there any better official guidance that anybody's found?

BTW my reason for asking this is I recently had to return my 645m because the barometer stopped working.  Garmin were great about the return so no complaints there but will they be so kind once it is out of guarantee?  I suspect that it might be a design flaw with the watch because the tiny holes for the barometer can get blocked.  This is particularly so if you live in a hard water area but it also can be worse depending on the type of skin you have or how salty your sweat is. From reading other forum posts, people who use the watch to go pool swimming (as I do) seem to have more problems.

The official Garmin advice says to use a cloth plus mild detergent but this won't necessarily work if the scum has actually got inside the hole.  Some people have suggested using a toothbrush but Garmin says that this could damage the barometer. So that leaves ultrasonic as possibly the only way of cleaning the device... unless anybody has any other suggestions?

You're probably better off emailing Garmin support than asking on the forum.  If Support emails back that it's OK, at least you have something in writing by a Garmin employee should damage occur.  I read a while back that a VA3 user used a Waterpik Flosser to clean out mineral deposits from their barometer port.  I'm not recommending that you do so, as I'm sure anything used that may cause damage outside of Garmin's recommendations would void your warranty.
