GPS accuracy

I have a 645M and went on a run this morning.  MapMyRun logged 9.8k and my 645 logged 8.9k which is quite a difference.  When I've worked it out it should be around 9.6k.  I have my watch set to GPS & Galleo.  Should I set it to GPS only or GPS +GLONASS?

Thanks

  • Mine is awful after about 6 miles. Tracks pretty much perfectly, then either goes slightly off course for the rest, stops completely or jumps around all over the place. Glad I have a stryd which at least keeps my pace and distance correct

What’s the point then if you need a stryd for accuracy and pace?  That’s why I bought a Garmin. Don’t want to fork out and use another device!

The point is for better accuracy with pace and distance when there are times when a GPS is off; such as tree cover, buildings, or poor satellite reception due to weather.

Thanks for your advice. Does stryd link to Garmin connect?  Bit annoyed I can’t get accurate gps and pace from my Garmin alone that was the point of buying it.

  • The issue for me is I want a watch that does accurate gps, but I will use the stryd instead as it is nigh on perfect (it was also free!!) the new issue is that the gps is so poor that the mapping goes completely off, and I quite like the visual aspect of the map.

Im mainly annoyed that I have bought something that doesn’t work quite as well as I want - the discrepancy between stryd distance and gps distance can sometimes be stark!

out of interest do you use GLONASS or Galileo? I switched to GLONASS today and it seemed better...

I think I had GPS and Galileo set so will try GLONASS and see how that works. Also do you know which app is best to map your run accurately?  Part of my run isn’t on a main road so isn’t on some maps. Thanks

  • I changed mine to GLONASS this morning and it was better, however, I didn’t use headphones which also seems to help. Not great for the 645M model!!! I look at the map on GC and Strava - I do most of my running on the road, so it should be pretty easy to spot good and bad gps. I often get my full gps go down to 4 bars, and this can heavily affect accuracy!

I think one of the DC Rainmaker reviews mentioned that GLONASS is much more accurate than Galileo at present as Garmin have spent more time calibrating GLONASS than they have Galileo at this point.

I did a quick 5k run along a route I’d mapped via google maps and it was pretty accurate. I’ll try GLONASS next
