AirPods reset to max volume everytime after (re) connecting them with the watch or starting/stopping playback

Hi,

I am currently searching for Bluetooth headphones for my Garmin Forerunner 645 Music. My current test subject are the Apple AirPods (Gen2). I really like them because of their fit, because most of the other available headphones have to be plugged into your ear and I am not a fan of that. I do not own any other Apple device, so I am not happy that I am not able to configure the AirPods or update their Firmware.

Anyways, I've noticed a problem with them. When connecting them to my watch, they are immediately blasting at max volume. Despite the fact that the volume in the music player is set to 50%. If I change the volume level (in the music player), the volume of the AirPods suddenly drops to that level. The volume level is fine until I stop and restart playback. This problem does not occur with my (Android) phone, here the AirPods seem to "remember" their last volume (Interestingly enough, I have discovered some threads/blog posts about this exact problem with android phones, but with mineb they worked out of the box) . But it does occur on my Win10 Laptop.

I was wondering if anyone else is having this problem and has a solution for it. I've tried combing through the settings of my watch, but there aren't really any audio settings that seem to help.

Best regards
