GPS Taking too Long?

Hey everyone, I have had my 645m for a few months now, and I am getting a little frustrated with how long it takes the GPS to kick in sometimes (and dreadful battery life but that's another story).

I have tried glonass, GPS and Galileo but there doesn't seem to be any pattern with how long it takes to connect. Last week it took just under a minute which is fine, today I stood in the rain for 10 minutes trying to get it to connect! in the end I booted up my old tomtom 3 spark and it connected before I had even reached my front door.

I have tried rebooting the watch, the gps under settings is saying current - does anyone have any suggestions of what else I could try ?

I am located in The Netherlands, I live in a very open area (no high buildings and minimal tree cover).

I was hoping this watch was going to be an upgrade from my Tomtom Spark music at 3 times the price tag, but for simply running and basic stats it really isn't.

any help is appreciated at this stage as feeling pretty let down since switching to Garmin.
  • Time to get a lock depends on numerous things. How long ago you last had a GPS fix. How far have you moved since the last fix? Are you moving while trying to get a fix? Ten minutes is unusual though IF you're not moving.
  • What is the EPO status on the watch? Is it "Current" ("Huidige" in Dutch)? If that is not the case, I would suggest you sync the watch once using wifi or via Garmin Express on a PC.
  • thanks for the replies! I was under the impression if I sync my Watch to the connect app it updated the gps? is this not the case ? My TomTom has sat unused for the best part of 3 months and connected in seconds!

Yeah EPO status is current, and I make sure to sync it before a run. Very odd!

Maybe i am in a GPS black whole! the only positive thing, the TomTom blue tooth headphones work great with the garmin !

Its just very frustrating as I rarely get a set window to run due to having very young kid, so when I get a moment of opportunity to run, 10 minutes waiting is a fair old chunk taken out my free time!
  • My GPS lock most of the time only takes a few seconds (also in The Netherlands ;-)). What you are experiencing is not normal, especially when you are in an open area. Have you tried a factory reset of the watch already.

  • Hoi!!

I haven't tried a factory reset as yet, but I think that will be my next course of action. It is so weird it doesn't happen every time and normally it's under a minute to connect! fijne weekend!

khemmeh If you normally start your activities from the same location, try this if you haven't done so already. Go to the start location and using the "saved locations" feature from the carousel get a good GPS fix, and then save it and name it whatever you wish. The next time you go to start an activity from that location, the watch will recognize the stored info and use that data when you start the next activity. Of course this depends on satellite reception when starting the next activity, but I found a GPS fix is much faster this way.
  • Thanks TMK17 will definitely give that a shot! was not aware of that ability/ feature but sounds very handy as I start from the same location 80% of the time!
