Cracks on Forerunner 645 Music body

Hello garmin users,

I just wanted to highlight some issues I recently discovered on my black645M. I have it since March and had no issues till last week.

When I removed it after a run, the band detached itself and that's when I discovered that the body was cracked where the band pin inserts into the body of the watch
What's worse (if that's possible) is that after inspecting the entire body, I've found that the 3 other holes for the pin were also starting to crack.

I am very cautious with my watch that has never been shocked in any manner. I do switch bands sometimes (official garmin bands) and I'm always careful when doing so.
I don't understand how this piece can be so fragile after only 9 months of not so heavy use, I'm wearing it daily at work and I've been running with it only around 40 times (no swimming).

I've just returned it to the shop as it is still under warranty and I hope that Garmin won't make any trouble to replace it but I'm now afraid that such an expensive piece of gear may not last that long finally... My previous Vivoactive HR died after 9 months also but this time it was after a one sessions at a swimming pool so the water proofing was probably faulty that time.
I can't afford a Fenix Chronos that is full metal nor want to carry such a heavy watch, the F645M is the perfect size for me and has the functions I want in a watch...

I'm adding some pictures of the cracks so you can see what it looks like.

I've seen similar posts for other models but nothing so far for this watch. Has anyone faced that already? ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1431516.png ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1431517.jpg
  • Happened to my watch twice! First, I thought it was a random manufactory problem and replace my watch through the dealer, but now happened again!!!!

    One week before a marathon!

I am running with Garmin’s watches for 11 years and I’ve never had such a problem with their products. I am extremely disappointed and don’t know what to do now. 1 week before a marathon :(

  • It is like you took a picture of my 645 as well...same issue.  Fell off when I was putting my backpack on.  Same cracked area (although mine only has one post cracked).

  • I had the very same issue 2 weeks ago and sent it waiting for a replacement as it is still under warranty (bought it august 2018). After almost one week they sent me an email giving me 3 options: 1. pay 145€ to have it replaced; 2. pay 25€ to have it back as it is (not repaired o replaced); 3. leave it to them to be scrapped without charge.

I am really very disappointed. The first option is the only one that makes sense, but how can I rely on this watch to not break again after few months? I thought Garmin was a reliable company... now I don't think I could buy anything else from them or recommend to anyone. Confounded

  • Same things for me. I bought mine in April 2019. I decided to change the bands with a new one that I bought direct on Garmin Shop Web Site (so original and not Chinese band). After this simple operation I found in my hand a small black piece of plastic that came from the body of the watch. I contacted Garmin Italia and they said that this is not covered by the Warranty and if I want to have a new watch I have to send it to them paying by myself the shipping and then they will sent back to me a new one at the price of € 145,29. This is unacceptable for a product that is under warranty and also is clear that has a construction problem. The definition was that is an aesthetic problem and related to an improper use of the device: sorry Garmin, but if I can change the band on my own because this can damage the product, don't let the end user to do it.

  • Get in touch with them and tell them that they will replace it as it’s a manufacturing defect.  I had mine replaced in the uk out of warranty.   Make sure you mention this forum when you go back to them.  They know this is a defect of the watch so what they are saying is rubbish.  Unless of course you did manahandle it being to rough.

If you still have issues sent a letter of complaint.  They will soon buckle and replace it.

    good luck

  • Deduco che sei italiano come me.

I deduce that you are Italian like me. The very same thing they wrote to me. I also contacted the support via chat and they only reiterated that the defect does not go under warranty. I also sent a new email to the address from which they sent the quotation, but they did not deign to reply. I am truly disappointed.

  • I forgot to mention the Garmin Official Forum... and on the other side they told me that I had post on Facebook on Garmin Italian Users Group this problem, saying that the other users are positive to garmin that I had done the damage. This is not something that a Business Leader like Garmin should do towards its customers. I would like to have a feedback from the main company in USA regarding this kind of behavior.

  • corretto. Pazzesco.

You are right, I am Italian. Fortunately I live in Milan and nearby Garmin Italia. My wife went to them for not paying the shipping costs on Monday, they sent an email less than hour. Next day, after a lot of rages phone call, she went to pick it up but they insist that I have to pay €25.41 to have it back. This is Crazy !!!!!

    ENG:

Do they even ask for 25€ for hand pick-up on site? Crazy... I never expected such a thing form this company. Anyway, I sent another email and a private message on twitter (I do not have facebook) to Garmin USA explaining what happened and I linked this forum. Let's see if one of them will reply something.
