Why is the provider in music settings and not in the music app?

I got my 645M a few days before the Spotify app was released, but didn't have any BT headphones yet. I went ahead and followed directions I found online to load some of my iTunes playlists from my computer onto the watch, I could find them easily on the watch, even if I couldn't yet play them. Then the Spotify app was released, so I loaded it and copied over some playlists, and on the same day, finally bought some Airpods (works 99.8%, posted my experience on the headphone sticky thread) and was enjoying Spotify from my 645 ...but couldn't find where on the watch my iTunes songs where located for the life of me, even though I could see them in Garmin Express. Searched this board and other online sites and still couldn't figure it out.

I just happened across another post on this board, several months old, which mentioned changing "libraries" in the general settings > music rather than in the music app itself under what it calls "Libraries." Eureka! But also, now, very confused on why it's set up this way. Makes it difficult if not impossible to switch between Spotify and my iTunes songs on the fly. Seems like a miss on the development side.

Just posting this in case anyone else is in the same boat as me and having trouble finding/accessing songs they've loaded from the computer (not Spotify) to the 645. It's not intuitive. Also, add me to the list that would love to see this changed in a future update.
  • Tip: Remember, you can press and hold the up button to access the settings for any widget or app! So in the music widget, hold up to see the settings menu.

I actually think it makes sense to put the “Music Providers” in the settings, as it is, after all, a setting (albeit rather cumbersome to toggle between different music sources).

What doesn’t make make sense to me is why “Manage” is in the music widget’s carousel as this too, should be a setting. And then, you have the redundant menus of “Music Providers” and “Headphones” in the “Manage” menu, even though you have already selected a music provider.

Thanks for the reminder... and even if I did agree with you, that 'General Settings' is the correct location for switching sources (and not saying that I do, haha)... I completely agree on your parenthesis note about it being cumbersome to toggle. Several, several clicks/button pushes to accomplish it... I'm just of a personal opinion, if I'm trying to do this mid-run, fuhgeddaboudit!
  • If you do the analysis, putting it the Music Providers option in the Settings is no more clicks than putting it in the Music widget carousel.
In fact, I think it’s potentially less clicks.

    Excuse me for getting nerdy...

Option 1: Music Provider in the Music Widget Carousel (hypothetical)
    1) hold down to get the Music widget
    2) click “...”
    3) click up or down to highlight “Music Provider” if not already highlighted
    4) click to select “Music Provider”
Total = 3 or more clicks

Option 2: Music Provider in Music Settingsl (as implemented on v4.1)
    1) hold down to get the Music Widget
    2) click and hold up to get Music settings
    3) select “Music Providers”
    Total = 3 clicks

I can’t see how Garmin can improve on making it more quickly accessible.

But I do agree that’s it’s not very obvious. If you don’t know the shortcut to hold up for the Music settings, then yes, it’s extremely clumsy.
  • Easy when you know how - thanks for saving me the time to do a full-reset.
