Garmin Basecamp compatibility with 645?

Hi,

Does anyone know if the 645 is compatible with Garmin Basecamp? I want to load GB grid references onto my device as saved locations for hiking. At the moment I have to save current location and then edit the co-ordinates but I have to convert the grid reference to WGS84 using an iPhone app first as you can't change the location format on the 645 unlike on the Fenix and 935.

I know Garmin wants us to buy a Fenix for doing this but you can still navigate to waypoints perfectly with a 645. It just more inconvenient if you are hiking in the UK and want to use Ordnance Survey maps as you have to do a manual conversion.

Thanks
  • While I don't own a 645, as I mentioned before, I tried out Basecamp with my 935 and was able to enter OS grid coords for waypoints and send them to my 935 from within Basecamp. I also tried exporting a waypoint from Basecamp to GPX format (without connecting any device), and copying it manually to the NEWFILES/ folder on my 935, and that worked too.

So even if the 645 was artificially locked out of Basecamp, hopefully you should still be able to use the manual copying method.

As far as official specs go, I see some conflicting info. Some review sites claim 645 supports Basecamp, while Garmin's official specs don't list Basecamp support for the 645 (while mentioning it for the 935). I don't trust Garmin's official specs tho, because the Lactate Threshold test is missing from the 645 specs. while it's right there in the manual....

Anyway, it doesn't hurt to try. (TBH, it's not the greatest software in the world, so I don't blame you if you're reluctant to use it.)

    Good luck!

And if you miss the convenience of entering OS Grid coords directly on your watch, I still think that would be a great idea for a Connect IQ app....
  • I find it frustrating how you have to launch into an activity such as a walk or a run just to manage your list of Saved Locations, and it has to be in WGS84 format. Why, Garmin, do you allow navigation functionality in the 645 but make it so hard to use this feature to its full potential? I would never buy a Fenix just for this, but on the 645 it’s more complicated than it needs to be for no apparent reason. It’s not like the 645 is the cheapest Forerunner, so for £400 I expect this basic functionality on a multi-sport GPS watch.
  • You could always suggest an app that does exactly what you want — manage locations in OS grid format. I don’t think it’s far fetched since there’s more than one app that displays locations in OS grid format.

Maybe you wouldn’t buy a Fenix for better navigation support, but obviously Garmin thought some ppl will. In my experience, that’s not the kind of decision that marketing departments reverse after the fact. Maybe in the next generation of products, but not in the current one.

I get why you’re frustrated, but I don’t think Garmin is gonna change it for you, no matter how many times you post that you’re unhappy. Maybe in a future 655, but not on this watch. Just my guess. So your options are:
    - find a different way to do what you want
    - ask a dev to make an app that does what you want (*)

(*) I happen to think that this is a lot more likely than Garmin adding such an obviously deliberately omitted feature to the 645. Garmin already has your money, and it looks to me like they don’t care if you think you got ripped off, since you kept your watch anyway. A hobbyist dev might do it for fun, for the learning experience, for the challenge, or just for the satisfaction of trying to help others, which is not an option for Garmin employees.

The topic of OS grid coordinates and the 645 has already been discussed with you Scott. The same suggestions Will made about using Garmin's suggestion site, or requesting an IQ app was a discussion we had in a different thread a while back. We even spoke about a possible workaround for this issue. I get that you expect the 645 to do certain functions, but the bottom line is it doesn't. You're not going to get a Fenix capable device in the 645. Use the suggestion site and request an IQ app. Hopefully, you'll be able to get one of them. Bringing up your disappointment about the same issue in a new thread isn't going to accomplish anything.

  • Not really, the original question was, does the 645 works with Basecamp. If it does, that would be one solution to the problem, but to be honest, it's nearly as quick to convert co-ordinates and you don't need a PC to do that.
  • TMK17 That looks like one of several data fields that can display the current location in OS Grid format. I think what he's looking for is a device app or widget that can add, edit and delete waypoints based on coordinates entered directly on the watch, in OS Grid format, which doesn't seem to exist today.

The closest thing I've seen are some apps that can add waypoints using a companion app (usually for Android).

I'm guessing the reason this app doesn't exist yet is because nobody realizes there's a demand for it. I bet the dev of that app you linked would be interested in this idea tho, especially since he said he made the data field for his own personal use.
  • Thanks for the OS Grid Ref data field suggestion. It’s useful, but my iPhone with OS Locate and OS Maps apps can already do that.

What I want is for an app to add a Saved Location to the watch in OS Grid format – not my
current location but a location I want to hike to. I don’t know if this is possible for a developer to access and control that aspect of the watch’s operating system.

It seems as though I am the only 645 owner who actually uses this watch for hiking and not just running. Which surprises me as it’s ideal as a lightweight navigational aid.

Mine seems to work, i find it into left resource window, I also tried to drag and drop some tracks and I find them in activities navigation menu, ready to be navigated.
    Hope this is useful.

  • do you mean Basecamp support 645m now? because I try to connect 645m to basecamp few month ago and the basecamp just mention that 645m is not the outdoor device and it does not support 645m,so i just curious how did you connect the watch to basecamp.
