Forerunner 645/645M with Running Power (RD-POD)

Hi, I was trying to find a topic with this info, however, I could not find it, my apologies in advance if there is already this discussion here.

I run still with my old 620, and after 5 years I think it's time to change. I'm on the fence between the 935 and the 645. I'm a marathoner but not a tri-athlete, nonetheless, adding running power it's something I'm considering, thus, the questions below:

1) RD-POD gives to the 645 the running power metrics? I saw very misleading info so far; (935 it does base on a video DCRainmaker)
2) Training Load uses the running power metrics or completely disregards since it's not native to the watch?

Asking that because of Polar has its new Vantage V watch with the running power natively, but I'm not sure if I'm willing to jump out the Garmin ecosystem.

Thank you all
  • As of Garmin, the Running Dynamics Pod is compatible with FR 645.

    1. The Pod provides running dynamics data, but not running power data (as HRM Run chest belt does):
Cadence, ground contact time, ground contact time balance, stride length, vertical oscillation and vertical ratio.
To get running power data, you must use the Running Power datafield by Garmin.
    2. Training Load is calculated using heart rate data. It's some kind of modified TRIMP calculation.

Training Effect calculation also uses heart rate data.
  • I use a fr 645 music and hrm-run and iq app with power data. I am not sure if data is exact but is useful.
  • The RD Pod does work with the 645 but doesn't provide running power by itself. To get power you need to install one of the Running Power CIQ apps from the app store and have it active on one of your data screens.

I think there are four separate CIQ apps. The most versatile is the Combo Running Power app which is used as a single data field while giving you multiple power stats. (instant, avg, etc.)

Thank you all, since the 935 is now cheaper than the 645M I guess I will go with the 935. Thanks again
