Music stops playing during runs

I have the Garmin Forerunner 645 Music, and love everything about it except the altimeter (which I'll save for another topic) and the unreliability of the music. I've copied over unprotected mp3's to the watch, and when I start my run I'll set it to play all songs in either a playlist or all songs overall. Randomly (but very frequently) after it ends one song, it'll just stop playing altogether. When I look at the music screen, it'll show the last song that was played, 0:00, and paused. If I click play, nothing happens. If I try to switch to a new song in the Now Playing list, switch to another playlist, or switch to play all songs, nothing happens. It doesn't matter if it's in Shuffle mode or not, it doesn't matter if it's in Repeat All mode or not. It's not an issue with connectivity to the headphones, because I still get notifications on splits, e.g. "Mile 7, 8:34". If it's having issues playing a certain song, then it should be able to recover from that and skip to the next song, not fall into a broken state where it can't play ANY songs.

Most of my runs are 1 to 1.5 hours, and I rarely am able to get through an entire run without the music stopping at some point. The only fix is to stop my run, reboot the watch, start the music again, and then resume my run. I have the latest FW update. This is unacceptable for a $450 watch. Have others run into this issue? Garmin, any FW update on the way that will resolve this?
  • Hi, I have the same issue with my Garmin Fénix 6X Pro. Worked always fine, but three weeks ago I start playing a playlist and start run. I’m able to listen the first music and then stops. Doesn’t continue to the next ones. I’ve edit my uploads clean some reboot but the problem remains. Any one has this issue too? Garmin can you help with some solution for this? Thanks.

  • hello I have a 645m updated to 7.20. I've always had music reception problems: if the (left) arm is stretched out the music goes jerky, if I bring it close to the head it works. This watch must have a bad antenna, because I tried with QCY-T5 headphones before, and now with Galaxy Buds Pro 2.

Now, since few weeks the music from spotify stops while running. today for example it happened 5 times in 40 minutes. Very annoying.

When this happens I long press the down button and then click start/play. the watch opens the headphone connection and I press start again, so it starts working for a while.

I don't use other bluetooth accessories.

    Any help?

  • Generally, I find when odd things happen with Spotify, I can fix them by uninstalling Spotify off the watch, reboot the watch, and reinstall Spotify and the playlists.

  • I was having same type of issue with the 645 music. Call technicial hexp which they told me I was the only one! I read everything online and no I am not the only one. Tried to get a discount on a new watch….nothing ! Customer service for Garmin sucks.

Although I was so very frustrated with their service, i do like their forerunner device. I bought the new 255 music…. What a difference! Faster to upload the music, don’t have the music stopping and the battery last much longer.

again very disappointing garmin  customer service !

  • thanks, I tried now to uninstall/reboot/reinstall. I'll check next time!

  • You are not the only one.

  • I have Garmin Fenix 7X and I have same issue. It happened when I do long run which is a longer than an hour run. Music never stops when I do less than 1 hour activities so far. I usually start playing music via Garmin with the downloaded music from Spotify then start tracking my "Run". But after an hour or so running, music stops. Once it happened, I don't want to stop my running. But slowing down a bit, check Garmin watch to re-start. But there is no way to re-start music, especially when I am "tracking" my Run.  I haven't tried but I probably have to suspend tracking, then re-start music play and resume tracking again. This is really disappointed issues I'm having... I wish I could re-start music without suspending my tracking.

  • On my 645M music stops randomly, sometimes after 10 minutes, sometimes after 20 (I usually run 7-10km).

When it happens, i long press down, then start and start again.

It locks the earbuds and start again the music without reboots.

It seems a problem with the ram or with spotify, seems to crash the spotify app or the music feature.

Hope in a 7.3 firmware to solve...
