How to know when the activity recorder is started?

I'm really enjoying my 645 so far, but as someone new to Garmin devices it seems pretty easy to accidentally turn off the activity recorder and miss parts of your run.

1. I activated a course, but didn't realize this didn't actually start the activity recorder. As such, I missed the first bit of my run until I started playing with it and realized it wasn't started. I'm not sure there was anything obvious on the screen to indicate that it wasn't started.

2. I've sometimes manually stopped an activity, and then forgotten to restart it. Because of this, I've switched to using auto-pause which generally works great, but it'd still be really nice if you could change the "stop" button into a "manual pause" button and still get the automatic un-pause feature. It seems a bit odd why manual-pause doesn't even exist as far as I can tell, but manual stop does.

So, experienced users, how do you make sure you don't accidentally leave the recorder stopped? Are there alerts or icons I just haven't noticed yet, e.g. a way to always have a green/red border?

Or this just something you get used to / do most people just not ever stop and therefore this isn't an issue?
  • If you haven’t started the timer there should be a dark area at the top of the screen showing GPS status and paired sensors. If you’ve manually paused the timer then there’ll be a dark area where current stats will scroll and the Resume/Save/Discard/etc options.
  • Also you might want to check out the Auto Lock feature, as described in the manual.
Allows you to lock the keys automatically to prevent accidental key presses. Use the During Activity option to lock the keys during a timed activity. Use the Not During Activity option to lock the keys when you are not recording a timed activity.

Huh, you're right. Playing with it again, I think what confused me is that the green border shows up as soon as GPS locks, even though the timer isn't running yet. Seems like it should start red.
