Navigation and maps?

Has anyone used to navigation feature on the 645? I understand it's Garmin's first Forerunner that accepts courses and displays them on the watch without a map underlay. How is your experience following pre-saved tracks on it? My main use is when abroad without knowing the area. Is there a sort of turn-by-turn feature?

I suppose underlay maps will never happen on this device, or would it be possible? I don't refer to dwmaps which need an active internet connection to be displayed.
  • The FR935 also can download cources from Garmin Connect or other sources like MapMyRun, etc. When a course is selected it shows up as a breadcrumb track on the map page and will provide notifications when you get to a turn. You can see via the arrow where on the course line your are.

It is pretty basic, but does work.
  • I have done 70 mile bike rides using breadcrumb trails on various devices. I find them really easy to follow and work well. Never had an issue.
  • I've been using it to try out new routes, and have really been enjoying the feature. I go overseas next month to visit some family and am already laying out a few running routes to do, this feature gives me the confidence to do more than just go down one road for X/2 miles and back. It does alert you when you are coming up at a turn, about 100 feet out, and again right at the turn (along with which direction you should turn). There is also a red arrow that appears on the non-map screens to show you which direction you should be heading. It'll alert you if you are off course, and how to get back on. It won't tell you the street names or anything like that though.

I've been using this since the Forerunner 205!

  • gasteropod, same here. My 205, 305, 310XT, and my current 320XT all have the "Course guidance" feature.

The Forerunner x05 series was released in 2006.

What?? You want to tell me my 405CX and/or 610/20/30 had this feature!?

  • No, just the 205/305, which was the main reason I never went to the 405CX or any other device that doesn't have course guidance. Although the 630 doesn't come with course guidance, you can use a Connect IQ App, such as DWmap, to do essentially the same thing. But the main point was that this is not Garmin's first Forerunner that accepts courses, as they have been doing it since 2006.

It is pretty basic..... becomes an issue when there are multiple tracks running parallel to each other after a turn, like a switchback that splits into 2 trails. Also, if you are using Garmin Connect mobile to find a course near you, keep in mind that it might send you down somewhere that isn't runnable!! Did that in Byron Bay, and it wanted me to go down a riverbed that was 8ft tall jungle.
  • Great news, 645 is a great watch
  • Can anyone tell me if the 645 has an electronic compass and does it give you an arrow to follow to a waypoint etc?
