Routing App for hiking - upload gpx file

Might be not the right forum for this question but maybe someone tested it on the FR645 already.
I would like to upload a hiking track as KML/GPX file to the FR645 for my orientation.
For this I would need an App to display the track and helps to navigate.

I've found dwMap and dwCourse but I can't figure out the difference. Anybody here who knows both of them. Both apps support the FR645.
Is there another App which can do this?
  • I believe this is supported natively, without the need for an app. Select an activity (such as run), press and hold the middle left button, scroll to navigation and select courses. To upload a course, put the GPX in Garmin/NewFiles, or create one on Garmin Connect

  • OMG, you're so right.
I've never seen that you can load a course there.
    Nice feature.

    What is dwMap/dwCourse good for?
  • I've used it few times recently and it works well -- nice feature. You have to remember to press "Start" besides starting navigation. Route planning in Garmin Connect works well, as well as importing them from GPX files.
  • On watches with built-in maps, such as the Fenix 5 series and Forerunner 645 and 935, we usually steer users towards routeCourse because it lets you use the https://dynamic.watch route import/management system and wireless route (course) downloads together with the built-in maps feature of those watches.

This advice changed a bit recently when we added the "background maps" feature to the Premium version of dwMap where you can view Google Maps, OpenCycleMaps etc maps with your route on those watches when you use dwMap in Premium mode instead of the built-in maps, which don't offer a map display (except the 5X of course).

So if you want to stay in the free realm, definitely you'll find routeCourse most useful on your FR645, while the Premium version of dwMap adds a novel feature to your watch.
  • JacekOst: I'm using https://maps.openrouteservice.org/directions for a route (walking/hiking) when all the hike pathes are on the map. For free routing off from a hiking path I'm using http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/draw/ to create a gpx file.

mappicus: I think for dwMap with background you would always need an internet connection via your phone. I'm sure it's nice but not practical for me. I don't see the additional benefit for mwCourse over the build in course.

I'll test now the "BF Hiker Map" app.
  • skopek: Thank you, these are useful tools. This service (just found in another thread) seems OK:
