Activity memory almost full, upload to garmin connect

Got a message similar to the text above on my 645 after a run this evening. Bit strange as the watch is paired to my phone so activities get uploaded automatically as soon as I get back within range of it.

When I got home, I connected the watch to my PC to check the space and indeed the 19Mb of space available is almost full! Almost all the space was taken up by the GARMIN\Activity folder which was 17.1Mb and contains every activity (143) I've done since I got the unit on March 13th! I've just manually deleted all these files as they've all been uploaded to Connect already but surely this should have been handled automatically as it was on my previous 620?
  • On my watch, Windows Explorer was showing the disk as 100% full so it might have had enough space to hold one more activity but it had deleted nothing since I started using it. No response from my support request to Garmin as yet but I'll report back when/if they respond.
  • so have you synced with Garmin Connect via Garmin Express or Garmin Connect Mobile?
  • The other question is whether you are supposed to get that warning if you have, in fact, synced with Garmin Connect.

I have seen the low memory warning on my FR310XT and later on FR735XT. The FR310XT I synced via ANT Agent and later via Garmin Express. The FR735XT I sync almost exclusively over Garmin Connect Mobile, but I synced several times over Garmin Express on PC. And it makes no difference. Usually it takes months for the low memory message to appear. Neither syncing method ever deleted anything by itself. I never waited for the watch to get 100% full, so I'm not sure if it would start to delete oldest activities (according to the manual the Garmin Swim does that, just for example) or refuse to record additional activities, as I always manually deleted all activities upon the low memory warning.
  • do you use a Mac? Just wonder if its something to do with a Mac never deleting anything until the bin is emptied...

To be clear, my watch doesn't immediately delete synced activities either, it just (apparently) deletes old activities when the watch gets close to being full.

    - When I sync (via Garmin Express, WiFi or GCM), the activities I just synced are still on the watch
    - My watch only has activities going back to February, despite my owning the watch for one year
    - I never delete activities manually
    - I've never seen the "activity memory full" message (could it be that I missed it every time? Maybe, but I doubt it.)

do you use a Mac? Just wonder if its something to do with a Mac never deleting anything until the bin is emptied...

I doubt it has anything to with Windows vs. Mac (and Recycle Bin/Trash) per se, since:
    - You don't have to sync with a PC/Mac
    - When you delete files (normally) through Windows File Explorer, they go to Recycle Bin and stay there until the Recycle Bin is emptied, much like Mac
    - The Recycle Bin/Trash is something that's mostly for end users, for when you accidentally delete files and want to recover them, where it doesn't really delete files, but moves it into a hidden "trash folder". Apps like Garmin Express are free to actually delete files without using the Recycle Bin/Trash
    - Garmin Express (and especially the watch itself) should be able to truly delete files without going through the Windows Recycle Bin or OS X Trash. I can say with a very high level of confidence that if the watch itself is responsible for deleting files, it is not going to try to figure out where the "Trash" is for your OS (Windows, Mac, Linux), because:
-- Garmin wants to actually delete those files to free up space, not just move them into a "trash folder" (which would not free any space)
-- You could be using your watch with multiple OSs, so even if Garmin wanted to move files into a "trash folder" (which they don't), it's not really 100% feasible
    - I can also say with pretty high confidence that it should be the watch itself that's responsible for deleting files, because you never have to connect your watch to a PC/Mac to sync, if you sync over WiFi or bluetooth (GCM).

Ofc, that doesn't rule some kind of weird bug that gets triggered when you sync with Mac. Then again, ppl in this thread mentioned they use PC.

My educated guess is it's some weird bug where the watch doesn't realize you synced your old activities and they can be safely deleted. I mean the fact that people have already synced their activities and the message is telling them to sync their activities tells me that it's either a very poorly written message, or a bug. Combined with the fact that not everyone sees this message, I would almost certainly call it a bug.

Maybe zip your entire watch filesystem and send it to Garmin support? Unfortunately there's data on the watch (like certain settings) which can't be accessed via the filesystem, but hopefully there would be enough information there.
  • do you use a Mac?

No, I use a Windows PC.
  • so have you synced with Garmin Connect via Garmin Express or Garmin Connect Mobile?

Not sure if this question was aimed at me but while it primarily uses GC on my phone to sync when I get back within range it also syncs via the PC when I connect it to charge. As mentioned this situation never arose on my previous 620 watch. Still zero response from Garmin Support to my ticket :(
  • I got the message 2 days ago so I cleared my activities manually. The only downside was my "week to date" mileage on my watch face went back to 0 (understandably). Never received such a message on my old 235.
  • One line answer from Garmin Support - "When there is not enough space the oldest activities will be automatically overwritten by the new activities." No investigation done there I think, if this is true then why are we seeing an error message?

Yes I saw that the weekly mileage went back to 0 as well after I cleared the activities but not that big a deal. Guess I just need to put a reminder in my calendar to clear it out every month although if the 620 could do this why can't their shiny new 645?
  • Is everyone seeing this message using an "M" model? I've had my non-M since the mid-March and have yet to see it despite running 6 times/week, yoga after most runs, and bike commuting most days for the last 2 weeks.
