Watch FROZEN - how to fix?!

I just looked at my watch and it has been frozen at 11 56 am - no button works and no seconds are moving. Before this freeze, my watch has sometimes randomly been going into activity mode (Run) like I had pushed the Start/Stop button. Something isn't right here, I think my phone is defective. Is anyone else experiencing this? Joey, what should I do? Thank you.

Pressing and holding the Power button until the watch shuts off should allow it to unlock from its current state. If that doesn't work, reach out to us through our Product Support channels (phone, email, or chat) so that we can work with you directly.
  • Thanks Joey. So my phone at the time shut down out of the freeze and had no battery left - weird because it was almost at 100%. Now I fully charged my watch and restarted it, and the time is off - it is saying is 205 pm when it is 922 pm right now. Something isn't right. I will reach out to Garmin. Thanks.
  • MrJakey, you need to allow the watch to successfully acquire a GPS satellite signal, in order for the correct time to be set on it. A hard reset performed by the user, or a spontaneous crash of the firmware, results in the clock time set to something other than the current time of day; and, no, the watch will not use either the clock on your Bluetooth-connected mobile device, or your computer if you're syncing with Garmin Express using the USB docking/charging cable, as a proxy for an authoritative source for the time.
  • Just like my VAHR, my wife's FR645 didn't need a GPS-fix for the exact time. It simply got it by syncing with the phone/GC. So I guess the newer devices (since VAHR, at least), don't need GPS for the time. Her old FR235 and my fenix 3 HR on the other hand, needed a GPS-fix.

Still, if the FR645 refuses to get the time from syncing with your phone, you will have to get a GPS fix. If this won't work neither, I'd recommend a hard reset, followed by a sync with GE (NOT GC) and a follow-up GPS-fix.

Seconded. As discussed at incredible length elsewhere in the forums, modern Garmins will lose time if you turn them off completely and/or if the watch restarts due certain types of crashes. Modern Garmins also definitely have the ability sync the time through bluetooth (via GCM). But yeah, if that doesn't work for some reason, go for a run and get a GPS fix, or use this procedure:

    https://www8.garmin.com/manuals/webhelp/forerunner645/EN-US/GUID-2DF56F4C-E585-4C07-9BB5-B0B585FFCF89.html
    • From the watch face, hold UP.
    • Select Settings > System > Time > Sync With GPS.
    • Wait while the device locates satellites (Acquiring Satellite Signals).

  • Thanks all. So to confirm, my watch suddenly froze for an hour or so, then shut off and completely drained battery from about 90%. I charged it back to 100% and now the time clock is off. I will follow your advice on how to fix. I should note that recently I have noticed my watch will suddenly go into activity mode, as though I had pushed the Start/Stop button once.

Do you think its best I trade this in for a replacement (free), or try to get this to work by doing the GPS sync? Even if it fixes the time, I just don't want to be holding onto a defective watch that could have this happen again. Thanks.
  • If the retailer or Garmin is prepared to replace your device, for peace of mind I'd take the replacement straight away, if I were in your shoes.
