Audiobooks?

Has anybody tested audiobooks?

Audible says they work with Garmin and TomTom GPS devices but when I spoke with them they said nuvi only. Something about needing to be able to send a firmware update to the device to support their audio books... or something like that.

Google audio books allow you to download to your phone for offline listening but not to your PC. Their support says technically the book gets downloaded to your PC automatically but it must be started online every time.

Thanks,

Dennis
  • I think anything that DRM embedded is going to be a problem.
  • If you buy books from Audible there is a pretty easy (but not quick) way to strip the DRM from the files (it involves playing back at normal speed). You can then transfer the files to the 645. It’s probably illegal but since you own the book and you are making a copy for your own use there might be a fair-use exemption. If you want to find out how to do it it’s easy enough to research.

    FYI - from Amazon today:

At this time, "Garmin 645M" is not compatible with Audible files. We are very sorry for any inconvenience this may cause you. We are continuously evaluating opportunities to expand the Audible platform and we are excited to bring additional devices into the Audible fold in the future.

Has anybody had any luck with audio books?

  • read my message above. I an an Audible subscriber and can get MP3s made from the audiobooks onto the 645M. Google is your friend.

Thanks! Still interested in compatibility without having to strip the DRM.

Creative and Sandisk MP3 players are compatible with Audible.
Other Garmin devices (Nuvi??) are compatible with Audible.

Doesn't seem like the barriers to entry are very high here.

PS - How does it work with the stripped audio books?

Can it tell the difference between an audio book and a song?
Does it remember where you left off? Even if you listened to some music in between?
Is it chaptered? If not can you store individual chapters as individual MP3s?

    Thanks,

    Dennis
  • I suspect there is licensing to be done to be audible compatible.

in answer to your other question. Yes it can tell the difference. You just put the mp3s into a different directory

yes it remembers where you left off even if you listen to music inbetween

no it’s not chaptered but you can split the mp3s into chapters. After you strip the DRM you get 1 mp3 per audible file. This will be too big to manage. You want to split that into something smaller. There are programs to do this. I just split it to 30min files but you can get programs that split by listening for the silence between chapters. Again use Google to find solutions.

  • You may find that converting Audible to MP3 before import and listen to them on your Garmin is much more convenient for everyone. You can do that with TunesKit Audible AA/AAX Converter.
